Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition Project Director Stacy Brooks presents an award to Biggersville Elementary Student Emma Wallace for winning third place in the RAT (Reject All Tobacco) statewide competition for her comic strip.
BURNSVILLE — A mobile home fire resulted in the death of a Burnsville man who is now believed to be a suspect in the arson of the structure. Sheriff John Daugherty officially made the announcement Friday after stating that the preliminary investigation leaned toward arson once his investigators, along with the State Fire Marshal’s Office, reviewed all evidence at the scene as well as eyewitness accounts pertaining to the alleged suspect, Ronald Cannon. The suspect, Cannon, 54, died
in the early hours Friday morning after being fatally burned in the mobile home fire. It was discovered Cannon and the owner of the home, Sandra Roach, had a prior relationship with each other. Roach was not at the residence at the time of the fire and was cleared of any wrong doing, said the sheriff. The explosion and and fire occurred early Thursday morning. Rickey Cummings, 911 Director/Fire Coordinator at Tishomingo County, said 911 got the call around 7 a.m. Thursday from neighbors on Please see SUSPECT | 2
Comic strip earns student Steak sale supports recognition in state contest BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com
BIGGERSVILLE — A comic strip about tobacco use recently helped a Biggersville Elementary student take third place in a state competition. BES fifth grade student Emma Wallace was honored with a prize presented to her by Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition Project Director Stacy Brooks during a luncheon at the Alcorn County School District Office. The contest was an annual event held by the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi’s RAT (Reject All Tobacco) program for grades fourth through sixth throughout the
state of Mississippi. The contest gave students the chance to use tobacco knowledge they gained through their RAT teams at their schools to design a sixpanel comic strip. The strips had to have a plot regarding the dangers of tobacco use and the importance of making healthy choices. BES School Nurse Christy Reese said all the students in the eligible grades were instructed to draw a comic strip using one of the tobacco facts, but she said Wallace’s comic strip was unique. “Emma drew different pictures for each comic strip square and put a tobacco fact
to go along with it,” said Reese. Wallace’s distinctive comic strip earned her third place out of over 1,000 entries for the statewide contest. Among other gifts, Wallace won a set of Beats by Dre EP Headphones and a framed copy of her comic strip. Emma Wallace is the daughter of Ashley Michelle Wallace and Stephen B. Wallace. The young student said she was very excited about her win and her father said he was “shocked and thrilled” when he heard about it. Reese said Wallace’s comic strip will also be featured in Please see STUDENT | 2
Civitan Club efforts BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The Corinth Civitan Club is firing up the grill today. The annual ribeye steak sale will be at Gardner’s Supermarket from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For $12, the club is serving up an 8-ounce ribeye with baked beans and slaw. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Lesley Raines, club president. “All of the proceeds go for needy children in the community.” The club provides scholarships for one senior from each of the local high schools each year and gives a number of
first-graders a better Christmas with a lunch with Santa. They receive gifts from Santa as well as new clothing and shoes. The steak sale is a longstanding fundraiser that has seen as many as 600 ribeyes sold in recent years. Corinth Civitans celebrated their 60th anniversary in the past year and are looking to grow. The worldwide mission of Civitan International is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.
National Nurses Week spotlights 35-year career BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com
What began as a curiosity blossomed into a career which has lasted 35 years and counting. Lyn Harrison of Corinth said she wanted to be a nurse for a long time. When she graduated high school, she said there several different careers she considered, but she distinctly remembered talking to one of her aunts about a career in nursing. She recalled seeing her aunt in her nursing uniform and speaking to her about working at the hospital. She said whenever she visited anyone in the hospital, she had a natural curiosity about whatever the doctors or nurses were doing and she would ask questions about every procedure the medical professionals performed.
“I remember being told [by a family member] to stop asking questions and to let them do their job,” Harrison said, with a laugh. “They said, ‘They don’t need you up there in the middle of it.’” She said her interest in the profession was piqued. She also enjoyed some of the health classes she took in high school and this brought about a keen interest in the medical field. She started out graduating as an LPN at Crump Vo-Tech, but she knew she wanted to do more. “That got my feet on the ground. By then I already knew I would be taking courses and working to get my ADN to be an RN,” said Harrison. Lyn Harrison has been working at Magnolia Regional Health Center 35 years this month. She works in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at MRHC.
It was a journey for her to get there. She began as an LPN in 1982, after she graduated with her ADN in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College. She continued to study and graduated from the Mississippi University for Women with a BSN in 1991 and she eventually was Please see NURSES | 2
