The Alcorn County school bus fleet is getting a little newer. The Alcorn School District Board of Education approved the purchase of a new school bus this week. The district will spend around $66,000 for the bus after receiving a $15,000 grant. “The average age of our buses are now 13.6 years,” said Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell. “That’s pretty old. We have buses running around 20 years old.” According to Mitchell, 42 of the district’s 49 buses were purchased between 1998 and 2005. “We’re at a point where we need to start budgeting to replace buses in the next few years,” he added. Mitchell said he hopes to update the fleet with some money from a possible $4.2 million bond and three-mill tax levy extension if the board approves. Members adopted a resolution to issue the new unlimited tax note this week. The last major purchase of buses happened in May 2016 Please see DISTRICT | 5A

The upgrades to sidewalks and street lighting on Meigg Street are nearing completion. Work is currently focused between South Parkway and Young Street, where the street is closed. The project reached 70 percent completion as of the end of April, and less than three weeks of working days — not calendar days — remain on the contract. “The majority of the excavation work has been completed,” said Johnny Crotts of Cook Coggin Engineers. “Hopefully, the street closures and interruptions to traffic flow will be at a minimum.” Sections of the street have been closed throughout most of the work. The roughly $600,000 project to create an attractive pedestrian corridor from Cass Street to the park is funded through the Transportation Alternative Program with a match from the city. The work includes 4,100 feet between Cass Street and South Parkway with removal and replacement of existing sidewalks and the installation

Yard sale proceeds benefit museum project BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Working toward a goal. The latest edition of the Daily Corinthian Community Yard Sale is set for this weekend, and the Crossroads Museum hopes to put a dent in money needed to save a local historic fire truck. Scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Corinth Depot and C.A.R.E. Garden, booth space rental fees from the annual event will benefit the nonprofit museum’s efforts to build housing to display the 1924 American LaFrance pumper fire truck on loan to the museum from the City of Corinth. “The Save the Fire Truck

Campaign has been a focus of the museum for about three years,” said Cathy Wood, the museum’s board president. “We need about $50,000 to complete the project.”

The museum received good news from the Corinth Area Convention & Visitor’s Bureau last month. The tourism board agreed to match up to $16,500 of whatever the museum raises this year. “Our goal right now is to raise as close to $16,500 as possible before the end of the year,” said Wood. All proceeds from each $25 10x10 booth space at the yard sale will go to the fire truck fund. The museum will also sell Coke products and pizza and host a gift shop sale during the event with those funds Photo by Steve Beavers benefiting the cause.
