Qualifiers sought for home grants BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The city of Farmington is seeking residents who may qualify for a grant-funded home rehabilitation or reconstruction project. Aimed at low-income persons, the Home Investment Partnerships Grant Program is available through certain governments served by the Northeast Mississippi Planning & Development District. It is intended to provide safe, decent and sanitary housing. “It’s a good opportunity if people meet the qualifications,” said Farmington Mayor Dale Fortenberry.

Civitans award 4 scholarships BY KIMBERLY SHELTON Local students were rewarded for their hard work and academic excellence on Wednesday as the Corinth Civitan Club met at Taylor’s Escape to formally announce the recipients of this year’s Roscoe Turner Memorial Scholarships. Presented annually, the $750 memorial scholarship is awarded to four deserving Corinth and Alcorn County seniors as part of the community-oriented club’s ongoing support of philanthropic causes. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Alcorn County native Colonel Roscoe Turner who was born in Corinth on Sept. 29, 1895 and became a pioneer in the advancement of aviation.
BY JEBB JOHNSTON The Alliance’s salute to existing industry on Monday will include a talk by the executive director of the Mississippi Community College Board. Set for 11:30 a.m., the annual Existing Industry Appreciation Luncheon will take place at the Mississippi State Extension Service Exhibit Hall. The event will include presentation of “industry of the year” recognitions. Application packets are available at Farmington City Hall. To be considered, a home needs to be found deficient in the areas of roof, foundation, plumbing, heating source and electrical wiring. Income limits are based on the number of household members. Those who qualify for full home replacements typically get a house of 1,100 to 1,300 square feet, depending on the number of people in the family. Replacement homes are built in the same location as the demolished structure.

Myles Russell’s normal day includes traveling around Northern Mississippi, his favorite part about being a field representative for U.S. Sen.Roger Wicker. “It’s a 36-county area I have to cover each and every day,” he said. “I love meeting and getting to know new people as I travel.” The 41-yearold Tennessee native lives in a downtown Corinth loft. “I purchased Joe McKewen’s old studio and converted the upstairs into a really hip, urbanstyle loft home for myself,” he said. Although single, Russell said he loves spending time with his four “awesome” godchildren. “I also enjoy traveling all over to see great live music,” he added. “Music is a true passion.”
