Free lunch: Tax increase talks begin BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

The Alcorn School District Board of Education continued discussion Friday regarding universal free lunch. Food Service Supervisor Peggie Bundy presented the board

with preliminary figures on what providing free lunch to every student would cost the school district. “The breakdown from the state said the district would spend $199,238,890 out of pocket per school year to pro-

vide universal free lunch,” said Bundy. “The district would have to put money into the cafeteria fund to cover the cost.” According to Bundy, the figure is very conservative. Board member and strong supporter of universal free

lunch Carroll Morton agreed. “We have to expect the number would increase,” said Morton. “If we were providing free lunch in the schools, I think there would without doubt be more kids taking advantage of the benefit.”

The figure is based on the district’s participation in the state assisted Provision Two program. In March, Mississippi Department of Education Food Please see LUNCHES | 3A

Absentee voting now underway BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The first votes have been cast in the races that will appear on this year’s countywide ballot, but just a few. With the congressional primaries coming up on June 3, absentee voting has been open for a few weeks. As of Friday, absentees cast in person at the circuit clerk’s office in the primary election included four in the Republican primary and one in the Democratic pri-

mary. Those numbers are not unusual in an “off” election year. “I have people ask me just about every day, ‘What kind of election have we got coming up?’,” said Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell. With Sen. Thad Cochran’s primary race generating some interest, he expects a decent turnout of 3,000 to 4,000 on election day to cast a ballot in Please see ABSENTEE | 2A

Associates love their jobs BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

(Editor’s Note: In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Mississippi State University Extension Service, the Daily Corinthian will be featuring staff in the Alcorn County office.) For Evonne Dye-Grove and Misti Crum, working with the Mississippi State University

Extension Service in Alcorn County has been a positive and rewarding experience. “One of the most rewarding things I do is getting to work with 4-H’ers. It’s sad when kids age out of the 4-H program, but some of them come back as volunteer leaders,” said Office Associate Evonne Dye-Grove. “Even more rewarding is getting to see a former 4-H’er come

back with their children as 4-H members.” Office Associate Misti Crum said for her, it is networking through the state, meeting with extension services in other counties, developing relationships and creating life-long connections. Both agree dealing with difPlease see EXTENSION | 2A
