With church safety currently a hot topic, the Corinth Welfare Association wants to remind local ministers of a resource available to assist transient individuals who need help. The Alcorn County Transient Fund can provide a night of lodging, up to $35 in gasoline and $5 in food for individuals who find themselves without a way.

“This is good for all the churches to know, because they really do not need to deal with transients,” said Corinth Welfare Director Ernestine Norris. “You don’t know what they’re dealing with.” The Church of the Crossroads did not know who it was dealing with in February 2015 when a man accused of murder came to the church asking for help. The first one will not be the last. Runners taking part in their initial Corinth 10K plan on coming back. The 35th running of the annual 6.2-mile trek through downtown Corinth saw 1,275 runners pick them up and put them down Saturday morning. Some were competing in the Classic 10K for the first time. “I had heard a lot about the crowd support and how much fun the race was,” said firsttime 10K participant Natasha Mayton of Cordova, Tenn. “I

Group of volunteers read Bible in 75 hours BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County’s first 75hour Bible Reading proved to be a huge success as 120 volunteers showed up, reading God’s word from cover to cover. “This is the first year I’ve done anything with National Day of Prayer,” said Alcorn County Coordinator Deeana Dildy. “The Lord spoke and mandated it to be done last year in Tishomingo County and my mom, Diane Rogers, who serves as the regional coordinator for Northeast Mississippi, had the vision to expand it to other areas.” Responsible for 20 counties

The owners of an old commercial strip on East Shiloh Road are moving toward demolition of the building. Because of its declining condition, the city recently condemned a portion of the structure. It currently houses one business, House of Beauty, at 2025 East Shiloh. The building sits perpendicular to the

street and alongside Phillips Creek. Building Inspector Greg Tyson said the occupied portion of the building is the only slot currently approved for use. It has several other slots that are vacant. The roof is failing and leaking in the other parts of the building, which has become Please see BUILDING | 6A

People of the Crossroads Buddy Ellis, Corinth Staff photo by Zack Steen

A familiar face in Walmart’s garden department, Buddy Ellis has been a sales associate at the Corinth store for more than 23 years. Although he enjoys helping the public, his true passion is Civil War history. “Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved Civil War history,” he said. “Growing up, my house sat on the land where parts of the Battle of Shiloh was fought. I could go out in the yard and pick up Civil War bullets. Being able to do that since I was boy really fueled my interest in the Civil War.” The 55-year-old serves as the first lieutenant commander for the local W.P. Rogers Sons of Conference Veterans camp. Ellis was also instrumental in securing the Mississippi Civil War monument at Shiloh National Military Park.

in her region, Rogers pitched the idea to the National Day of Prayer Task Force during their state meeting on Feb. 2. Once the motion was approved by the state coordinator, she then visited all 20 mayors to present the idea and get their blessing. “It was God’s will from the beginning because not one of them said no,” said a thankful Dildy. “For the first time in history, Northeast Mississippi was represented by all 20 counties on May 5.” A prelude to the National Day of Prayer, the 75-hour Bible Reading was kicked off Please see BIBLE | 5A
