Carriers ready to stamp out hunger BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

On Saturday, mail carriers hope to deliver lots of good will along with the day’s bills, magazines and packages. Corinth mail carriers are again participating in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which has

delivered thousands of pounds of food to the AMEN Food Pantry. It is a project of the National Association of Letter Carriers. “We collected over 13,000 pounds last year, which was up significantly from the year before,” said Buddy Shumaker, a Corinth mail carrier. “We’re hoping for the

same success this year.” It’s easy to participate: Letter carriers ask that residents simply leave a bag of nonperishable food items in a bag by the mailbox on Saturday. Acceptable items include things such as peanut butter, canned soup, canned meats and fish, canned vegetables, canned

fruits and juices, boxed goods such as cereal, pasta, and rice. “This is a really big part of the pantry’s intake every year,” said Shumaker. “We’re just happy to be able to do it.” The need is strong: According to Please see CARRIERS | 6A

Traveling 20 miles day, Bushby spends around seven hours on the road. He began his trek to Corinth via U.S. Highway 72 Tuesday morning. “People have been amazing,” said Bushby with a smile. “Too much so -- it has slowed me down.” Walking isn’t something new to Bushby. Opera star expects ‘sweet time’ BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

It all started in Corinth for an international operatic star performer. Jane Redding knew she wanted to be a professional singer at a young age. “My twin sister, Jeanne, and I began singing together when we were 10 years old,” said Redding. “We sang for practically every civic organization, Christmas party, church and beauty review in Alcorn County for years.” The 1986 Corinth High School graduate is coming home to sing again when the Corinth Music Club sponsors “An Evening with Jane

Redding” on Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m. A $10 d o n a tion is requested for each ticket for the per- Redding formance slated to be held at First United Methodist Church. Tickets are available from any member of the Corinth Music Club or can be picked up from Ginger’s. “It’s going to be a sweet time,” said Redding, who lives in Carrollton, Georgia

with her husband, Dr. Kyle Marrero and their daughter. “I have worked hard to find a balance with the program.” May’s event will be the first time the Corinth native has been back in town for a public performance in around 20 years. “It was many moons ago, but I remember doing something with the symphony at the the coliseum,” she said. “I still have family in Corinth and I will get to see a lot of friends when I am in town.” Redding has scaled back Please see REDDING | 2A
