Alcorn County Jail inmates riot BY MARK BOEHLER editor@dailycorinthian.com
A potentially dangerous situation was quickly brought under control Tuesday night when 30 Alcorn County inmates created a riot.
Inmates barricaded themselves in their jail zone so officers could not enter, used a toothpaste solution to opaque viewing windows, then created a small fire to fill the cell with smoke at 7:30 p.m. Tues-
day, Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell told the Daily Corinthian. “We had it under control pretty quickly,” said the sheriff. “We had a great response from jail staff, sheriff’s deputies and
help from the Corinth Police Department.” There were no injuries and damage to the cell was limited to some smoke damage, he said. Once officers broke through the jammed door, the situation
was brought under control. Two county inmates caused resistance and have been placed into segregated cells, said Caldwell. “Two inmates caused a Please see RIOT | 2

Welcome Center rolls out red carpet BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
It was a gorgeous, but windy Wednesday as employees and volunteers gathered in celebration of the Alcorn County Welcome Center’s annual National Tourists/Travel Appreciation Day. Held from noon until 1 p.m. as part of the center’s National Tourism Week activities, the
exciting event served up invaluable information with a generous portion of Mississippi-style hospitality. “We wanted to mix things up this time so rather than having BBQ or other dishes as we have in the past, decided to do sandwiches, cookies, finger foods and other refreshments that would be easy to carry around while browsing,” said Wel-
come Center Supervisor Sherry Brown. “We plan on doing it a bit differently each year.” Jam-packed with complimentary literature, maps, guides and other reading materials, visitors were invited to sit and stay a spell as they explored the many offering of Alcorn County and the Magnolia State. Maddie Potts, Burnsville Photo by Opal Lovelace
Maddie Potts, 10, loves to compete in pageants. Once a very shy child, she entered her first pageant at age 5. “After placing first alternate in that pageant, I was hooked,” she said. In 2015, she was crowned Miss Magnolia and Miss Pre-Teen Tishomingo County. A fourth grader at Iuka Elementary School, she credits pageants with helping her overcome being shy. In her spare time, Potts plays softball, is a fan of history, loves to read and enjoys tending to her animals on the family farm. “I really enjoy learning about Tishomingo history,” added Potts. She also volunteers each year for the Tishomingo County Christmas tree angel program. The youngster is the daughter of Jay and Heather Potts of Burnsville.
