More qualify to run in city election BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
After nine submitted papers on the first day of Corinth candidate qualifying, the pace slowed with four incumbents filing during the rest of the week. In terms of number of candidates, the most active race for alderman thus far is shaping
up to be ward 4, where incumbent J.C. “Honeyboy” Hill filed to seek a second term, running as a Democrat. He faces a rematch with former alderman Steve Hill, while a newcomer, Dewayne Porter, is also in the race on the Democratic ticket. Alderman at Large Mike Hopkins also turned in papers
this week. Going for a third term and running as a Democrat, he has a Republican challenger, John Orman. Also new to the list are the Republican incumbents in wards 2 and 3, Ben Albarracin and Chip Wood, respectively. Albarracin seeks a second term while Wood is going for a third. Neither has
an opponent thus far. There were no more party switchers after the two that emerged on Monday, but Republicans retained a slight 7-6 edge in numbers at the end of the week, with a candidate in every race except ward 4. Others who previously submitted papers include Tommy
Irwin (R) for mayor; Andrew “Bubba” Labas for ward 1; former alderman David G. Roberts for ward 5; and Ralph Dance (D), Ben Gann (D) and Fred Gooch (R) for police chief. Packets for prospective candidates are available at the clerk’s office at City Hall. The qualifying period runs through July 18.

Elvis impersonator Brett Garrett encourages runners during the Coke 10K.
Race day brings excitement BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Runners in the 33rd Annual Corinth Coca-Cola Classic 10K found the 6.2-mile event to be a hunk of “Burning Love.” Elvis impersonator Brett Garrett helped make runners feel “So High” they could do another “500 Miles” if they
had to “Run On.” “It’s all about promoting downtown,” said Garrett, who has been known to dress as different characters while taking part in the race. “We have so many great restaurants and businesses downtown and you can’t ever go wrong with Elvis.”
As Garrett made his way along the early stages of the race route he made sure to be back for the home stretch to encourage runners. Saturday saw 1,286 runners/walkers finish the annual event. For a second straight Please see RACE | 2A
Alcorn School District students will pay more for lunch when the new school year begins in August. Board members recently approved an increase in the price from $2.25 to $2.50 as required by the National School Lunch Program. The USDA federally assisted meal program provides low-cost lunches to all students. Corinth School District voted to increase the price city school lunches in February. The forced increase comes on the heels of recent board discussion about the district providing all students free lunch. Board member Carroll Morton strongly supports an all inclusive free lunch program. “We have tax payers in this county who are willing to accept the burden of the costs associated with offering every student free lunch,” said Morton during a recent public meeting. In March, Mississippi Department of Education Food
Service Supervisor Bill Urban met with board members to discuss the options offered from the state. “It’s rare for a school district to be willing to take on the cost of free lunches with state reimbursement,” said Urban. “Of the 75 percent of the kids in this district currently receiving the benefit of reduced lunches, only 31 percent are actually eating.” Urban offered details on the Provision Two program. “It is a program I would not advise in this district, but it might help accomplish what Mr. Morton is wanting to do,” added Urban. “It is a four-year program where the district will have to accept applications for free or reduced lunch the first year. Those first year application numbers will determine the amount of money the district receives for the next three years.” Urban said Provision Two would cost the district money, Please see LUNCHES | 6A

As assistant director for the Northeast Regional Library, Cathy Kanady was always looking to the next page. When she came to the four-county library system in 1986, her duties included technology coordinator along with the usual tasks of the assistant director. “It has evolved and people have changed,” Kanady said, reflecting on her 28 years with the local system. “People have adapted. We had librarians terrified of putting their hands on a keyboard, and eventually they learned. They learned that it was helpful technology.” The Ocean Springs native spent
