Police seek robber

Alcorn County unemployment was nearly unchanged in March while showing a decrease from a year earlier. At 4.1 percent, the rate is up slightly from 4 percent in February but down from 4.8 percent a year earlier. Mississippi’s seasonally adjusted rate stood at 5 percent in March, declining from 5.2 percent in February and 6 percent a year ago, according to the labor report released this week by
the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. The number categorized as unemployed in Alcorn County was 660, compared to 770 in March 2016. The number employed was 15,430, up slightly from 15,300 over the year. The county had 50 new applicants for unemployment insurance and 304 continued claims, compared to 71 new claims and 353 continued claims a year earlier. Please see RATE | 6A

The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors will hire a professional tree trimmer for some needed tree care at court square. The board on Monday accepted Affordable Tree Service’s quote of $4,500 for trimming work, cleanup and removal of debris for four oak trees as recommended after an examination of the trees by a specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service. Because of safety concerns, the county will also get a quote on removal of the hackberry tree near the Col. Rogers statue, which was not included in the prior evaluation. The local event for the National Day of Prayer has seven areas of focus for which prayers will be voiced. The Corinth/Alcorn County National Day of Prayer event will be held at the Alcorn County Courthouse Thursday from 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The event coordinator for the local program this year is Tate Baptist Church Pastor Mickey Trammel. The pastor expressed an enthusiasm for the event. “I think it’s (NDP) a beautiful, wonderful thing ... it’s good to see people from different churches and denominations come together,” said Trammel. People of the Crossroads Jamie Anderson, Corinth Jamie Anderson is a proud member of the team at Magnolia Regional Health Center. “I am basically involved in every group and committee this organization will have me in,” she said. “I just love what Magnolia has to offer to this community, as well as the staff.” She has been with the hospital for five years and is currently marketing assistant and event coordinator. With her husband of 12 years, Reggie, she has a 5-yearold son, Johnson, “who is our entire world,” said Anderson. She is a Kossuth High School graduate and is looking forward to attending Northeast Mississippi Community College in the fall to work on a degree in business and marketing.
