County short after MDOC payments BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Mississippi Department of Corrections recently caught up on some delayed monthly reimbursements to Alcorn County totaling about $1 million. Last week, the county received payments for November and December — months when

there were no state prisoners in the correctional facility — after previously receiving payments for February and March. While the county was excited to see those payments, it still faces a likely deficit in the correctional facility’s finances for the fiscal year. Chancery Clerk Greg Younger said the county

continues to look at options to address that situation, including refinancing the bond to lower the monthly payment and exploring the possibility of obtaining prisoners from other sources. The facility has beds left empty by MDOC’s decision to provide the minimum number of contractually guaranteed

prisoners at each of the regional facilities across the state. Local and private legislation that would allow Alcorn County to seek other sources of prisoners appears to be on the verge of becoming law. Senate Bill 2958, passed by the House and Senate, authorizes the Board of Supervisors to contract with the federal

government or other states for the housing of minimum or medium security offenders. Sen. Rita Potts Parks, who sponsored the legislation, said the governor is expected to sign the bill on May 13. The facility held close to 300 state inmates daily before MDOC scaled back to 240.

See tracks? Think train. Norfolk Southern employees were present at two downtown Corinth railroad crossings last week asking the public to watch out for oncoming trains.

As part of a new Operation Lifesaver campaign for rail public safety, employees handed out key chains and brochures during the safety blitz. “Whenever people see railroad tracks, we want them to use caution and expect a

train,” said Supervisor Special Agent Bill Allsopp with Norfolk Southern’s police department. “We were reminding and urging drivers to use caution before and as they are crossing Please see BLITZ | 5
