Equipment issue delays road project BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
An equipment problem has delayed activation of the new traffic signals at South Parkway and U.S. Highway 72. The lights had been expected
to be in operation by this week. “The wireless signaling device wasn’t functioning correctly and required reordering,” said Johnny Crotts of Cook Coggin Engineers. “MDOT approved the order for a new one earlier
this week. We expect two to three weeks for delivery.” Once the replacement is received, the new lights should be functioning within a couple of days. The new signalization will
provide a left turn signal for traffic on the north side of the intersection going from South Parkway onto the highway. The $398,000 project also included the widening of South Parkway on the north side with

Derby day bowties and hats are coming back to the Verandah-Curlee House. For the first time since 2007, the grounds will host a derby party for the viewing of the Kentucky Derby. It’s set for 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Supporters of the historic home are bringing the event back as another fundraising opportunity for the ongoing needs of the 1857 structure. “It’s going to be great fun, we hope,” said Nancy Palmer, one of the organizers. Dressed in sundresses and hats, seersucker and bowties, the derby partiers will enjoy appetizers and drinks and view the 142nd race at Churchill Downs on a large television. John Orman was the organizer of the previous derby parties in the 2000s. “The people that came really loved it and looked forward to it every year,” he said. “Some of those people I’ve told we’re do-

BIGGERSVILLE — More than a dozen parents and school staffers gathered inside the Biggersville school cafeteria on Thursday night to learn about the creation of Alcorn County’s first P16 Parent Advisory Council, a Mississippi Department of Education backed group which will soon act as a direct voice of advisement to the Alcorn School District Board of Education. “The P16 Council will be a place for parents, community members, teachers and students to be involved at a district level,” said Jodi Fiveash, who is spearheading the creation of the council. “The goal will be to bring positive parent involvement all across the district and bring parents of all schools within the county together to focus on improving our district as a whole.” Fiveash, who opposed the school board earlier this year on their closure of Glendale and

Author shares story of faith in new book BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
“I cross-stitched a ‘Count it all Joy’ plaque for my bedroom, using yarn to match the colors of the walls and fabric. When it was framed and ready to hang on the bedroom wall, I couldn’t do it. God knew I was still in the learning phase. Since I was not at the place God wanted me to be, I put it in a drawer. It took times of testing to come to the point where I could really ‘count it all joy’”. — Sarah O. Maddox IUKA — Keeping the faith despite life’s tumultuous journey, author Sarah O. Maddox
