If you have a hobby or a skill, then you may have something valuable to contribute to a new generation. This week is National Volunteer Week and Mississippi State University Extension Agent II Tammy Parker said many people have valuable knowledge and experience to offer young people as a 4-H volunteer. The MSU Extension Center celebrates National Volunteer Week and hopes the spirit of volunteerism will aid in the recruitment of much needed volunteers for the area 4-H. Modern lives are extremely busy and volunteerism is not as prevalent as it used to be, according to Parker. However, being a volunteer for 4-H doesn’t have to require a large commitment. “Volunteering is based on the time you want to give. It’s not that you’re required to volunteer five hours a week, it’s what you’re willing to give,” said Parker. “You can come and do one program or you can assist a volunteer leader of the club.” 4-H volunteers are making a difference in the lives of young people ages 5-19. The club emphasizes the potential of youth by providing non-formal educational opportunities, which

To keep economic momentum going for Yellow Creek Port South in Burnsville, there will be a need for regional partnership in getting water to Burnsville. Anne Thompson, Corinth Although Corinth native Anne Thompson is retired, she hasn’t stopped teaching or helping her hometown through tutoring at the Lighthouse Foundation and volunteering at the Free Clinic. She also teaches Sunday School where she attends at First Baptist Church. Before retirement, Thompson taught school for 28 years. She also managed the Interim Civil War Interpretive Center and worked for the Tourism Office for several years, which she said she loved and it played to her marketing background. “I loved selling my hometown and telling its stories. That was a fun thing to do,” she said. Thompson shows no sign of slowing down in her efforts to help others. A little girl yelled, “I love you Miss Anne!” as she left the Lighthouse Foundation. Thompson smiled and said, “Isn’t that precious? If that doesn’t melt your heart, then you just don’t have one.”
“We can’t do enough for them because of the way they were treated when they came back,” said Bobby McDaniel, American Legion spokesperson. “We invite all Vietnam veterans and their families.” April 30 has been set aside as Vietnam Veteran’s Recognition Day in Mississippi, thanks to a resolution presented by Rep. Bubba Carpenter (R-Burnsville) in 2011. April 30 was the last day for American troops in Vietnam in 1975. The Saturday morning breakfast is a way for the legion and auxiliary to say “thanks” to
