Development plan concerns Afton residents BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A proposed commercial development on neighboring property has got the attention of Afton subdivision residents

in North Corinth. The subdivision developer, Hill Brothers Leasing Company, is requesting the rezoning of land it owns at the northwest corner of Highway 2 and North

Shiloh Road from R-1 residential to C-1 commercial with the intent to locate businesses there. The item was before the city’s planning commission on Monday, and the advisory panel

agreed with residents’ request to delay its deliberation on the matter until the next scheduled meeting at 5 p.m. on May 23. Gerald Hill, representing the company, said the plans are

not definite, but shops such as a grocery, bank or bakery could be considered for the 20-acre property. Please see AFTON | 2A

BY JEBB JOHNSTON Fire departments throughout the county will benefit from a new air supply truck that will keep a ready source of air at fire scenes. The Corinth Fire Department is acquiring the truck through a FEMA grant of $100,000 toward the $153,000 cost. The city’s cost is $33,000, and Alcorn County is applying for a $20,000 reimbursement toward the cost because the city will dispatch the truck to fires in the county when requested by any one of the nine volunteer fire departments.

At 81 years old, House of Beauty Owner Janet Tubbs is as sharp as ever. In fact, she recently celebrated her 50th year in business. A 1953 graduate of Farmington High School, Tubbs completed her cosmetology training in Corinth in 1965 and hasn’t stopped since. The veteran stylist says she didn’t always want to be a hairdresser. “I first wanted to be a teacher, but at the age of 30 decided to get my cosmetology license.” A business owner since 1979, Tubbs will soon find herself without a space as her building is set to be torn down next month. “This place is like home to me. It’s sad to see it go.” Janet Tubbs is the widow of the late O.C. Tubbs. They were married for 55 years. She has no plans to retire anytime soon.

“What that does for us as firefighters is we don’t have to go back to the station off of that fire scene to air up more bottles,” said Emergency Services Coordinator Ricky Gibens. “We can air them up on the scene and keep people on the grounds actively fighting the fire.” It is a rare opportunity for the local departments. “It’s not just the first truck here,” said Gibens. “It’s the first truck regionally in 12 counties.” Corinth Fire Chief Todd Welch said the city “is very

Bringing state money back home has always been a goal of Sen. Rita Potts Parks. Last week, she celebrated a great victory with the inclusion of Alcorn County in the passing of House Bill 1729, a $249.6 million unforgiving bond for construction projects across the state. The Alliance will receive $400,000 from the bond for the continued development of Alcorn County’s Northeast Mississippi RailHub South, a 141-acre site located on County Road 220 just off KimberlyClark Parkway and U.S. Highway 72. “It’s great to be able to bring money home,” said Parks, who requested the RailHub receive funding from the bond bill. “I feel like this is the best way legislators can serve the district they represent and I believe this investment in Alcorn County will truly benefit all of Northeast Mississippi.” Alcorn County Rep. Nick Bain agrees. “We as legislators are constantly trying to find ways to promote our area and to create an environment conducive to success,” said Bain. “The bond bill was one of these ways ... the RailHub will hopefully help provide better jobs to this area for generations.” Located between Norfolk

Southern’s main Crescent Corridor line and the Mississippi Central Short Line operated by Pioneer Rail, an additional 417 acres is also available for development if needed to the north and south of the site. Parks said she believes the RailHub may be the area’s greatest asset. “It’s unique to have dual rail surrounded by available land and a major four-lane highway less than a mile away from the site. And that’s why we’ve got to get this site developed and available for possible industry,” said Parks, a native of Kossuth. “It’s a very competitive market for industry, but I believe we really have a prime location that will set us apart.” In addition to the recent bond money, The Alliance has also received $225,000 from TVA to help fund the development. “We appreciate Sen. Parks’ leadership, and that of our entire legislative delegation, in allotting these funds in the bond bill to improve our RailHubSouth site,” said Gary Chandler, president of The Alliance. “Corinth and Alcorn County have diligently been turning the dial of marketability on the site over the past two years. These new funds are a significant shot in the arm and will make the site more competitive against other 100-150 acre rail served
