County supervisors on Monday agreed on a program of road projects to submit to the Office of State Aid Road Construction. Totaling an estimated $870,000, the list touches all districts with either chip seal overlays or re-striping projects. “This is the first step toward initiating these projects with State Aid,” said Johnny Crotts of Cook Coggin Engineers. “The projects will be reviewed by State Aid and ultimately advertised for bids.” The list was formulated based on the maintenance report completed by the Office of State Aid Road Construction’s district engineer along with input from the supervisors on road needs. “There is never enough money to cover all of the needs,” said Crotts. “We would like to do much more.” Please see ROADS | 5A
Oasis Medical Center supporters walked ... and ran to raise money for the local medical service outreach on Saturday. More than 100 participates joined under the Oak tree shaded Crossroads Regional Park in Corinth for the 22nd annual Walk For Like and 5K Fun Run. “This wonderful event gives people an opportunity to get behind our ministry and really make a difference,” said Oasis Executive Director Martha Jobe. “It’s events like this that help us continue to provide so many important medical services at no cost to our clients.” Walk For Life participants asked family members, friends and co-workers to pledge a one-time tax-deductible gift to sponsor them in the event which included the 3K walk and 5K Fun Run. Pledge amounts were totaled and announced prior to the early morning race. The top two fund-raising teams tied this year ... and both teams were from outside Alcorn County. “We serve a six county

The Alcorn School District needs positive parental involvement, and Glendale Elementary School parent Jodi Fiveash is ready to delivery just that. With Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell’s blessing, Fiveash is creating the county school district’s first Parent Advisory Council. “Parents of this school district have never really had a place to be involved at the district level,” said Fiveash. “Individual schools have PTC or booster clubs and most principals encourage parent involvement within the individual schools, but there’s not a place for parents to group together and talk about things like district budgets, policies and goals.” She hopes the creation of a Parent Advisory Council will accomplish this. Known as a “P16” council by the Mississippi Department of Education, these groups are

Kossuth High School counselor Kim Lyles is a people person. “I love talking to people and helping them figure out what’s best,” she said. “Each year it’s a different set of kids, so being a high school counselor is never a boring job.” The Kossuth native has been employed at her hometown school for 22 years. She’s married to Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department jail warden Allen and they have two children, KHS senior Luke and The University of Mississippi senior Logan. Carol Bullard has spent her whole life helping kids. The former Corinth Elementary School teacher is still on the job when it comes to children. These days she is devoting her time on spreading the word about human trafficking. Bullard has started the volunteer group – Corinth Advisory Committee – to share with people the signs and dangers of the subject.
