A legendary member of the Northeast Mississippi Community College administration has been named the school’s next president. Ricky G. Ford of Booneville was officially chosen by the school’s Board of Trustees to replace Dr. Johnny Allen during a special called meeting on Tuesday. Allen announced last week he will retire effective June 30. Ford will take the helm as the college’s 10th presiFord dent on July 1. Ford currently holds the post of executive vice president at the school, a position he’s held since 2012. “I am deeply honored that the Board has the confidence in me to entrust me with the huge responsibility of leading Northeast into a new era,” Ford said. “I am looking forward to the next few months as we begin forming plans to do just that.” Allen expressed confidence and excitement about Ford’s appointment. “I count President Ford a trusted friend and colleague,” Allen said. “I know that his
love for Northeast will be the foundation for a successful tenure as president. This is an event which we all can celebrate.” A Pine Grove native and lifelong educator, Ford previously served as head basketball coach and a teacher at Booneville High School before becoming head coach of the NEMCC Lady Tigers in 1981. He would lead the Northeast girls to a perfect season and a national championship in 1986. In January he was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. On March 7, 2011, Ford stepped down as head coach to become the school’s dean of students and athletic director. He also served the school as an admissions counselor. Ford is a 1975 graduate of Northeast and holds a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. He and his wife LuAnne live in Booneville and are the parents of four children, Aaron, Lauren, Suzanne and Ben.

Second grader makes a difference BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Eight-year-old Lanie Moore was determined to make a difference. Three years ago when her church decided to form a Relay For Life team, the young daughter of Joe and Penny Moore instantly became interested. “She came to us wanting to do something to help,” said Penny. “She was very excited and passionate about doing what she could to raise money.” After some thought, Penny and Lanie decided to head to the kitchen to bake a few tasty treats.
Since then the mother and daughter have hosted an annual bake sale in order to raise funds for the Wheeler Grove Baptist Church Relay For Life team. In just three years, the Kossuth Elementary School second grader and her family have helped raise more than $4,000 for the cancer fighting movement. “When we started all this, I don’t think any of us realized how big it was going to be,” said Penny. “We keep doing it every year because of Lanie. She’s always so excited to get started.” Lanie’s annual bake sale will take place at her “Daddy’s work”,
