MRHC slates annual sports physicals event BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

“Being a mother with a child on the autism spectrum, the color run is very special to me. It allows my son, Jacob, the chance to face a couple of his fears including interacting with people and loud noises,” said Rochelle Hughey. “It also gives him a chance to see there are other people just like him and no matter what he’s a creation of God.” Hughey and her son plan to par-

Teamwork is important in school sports, and Magnolia Regional Health Center wants local students to know they want to be a part of the team. The local hospital’s Sports Medicine department will again offer special comprehensive sports physicals during their 24th annual event set for Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Crossroads Arena. “We will be providing athletic physicals to junior high and high school athletes from surrounding schools,” said Certified Athletic Trainer Michelle Gifford, who is coordinating the event. “Time slots are also assigned for each school to help cut down the wait time.” Unlike previous events, the athletic physicals are offered free of charge this year and includes a sports medicine t-shirt. The exam includes screenings and assessments of height, weight, blood pressure, vision, ear, nose, throat, heart, lung and orthopedic. Time slots are 5:30 p.m. for Biggersville students, 5:45 p.m. for Tishomingo County students, 6 p.m. for Alcorn Central students, 6:30 p.m. for Kossuth students and 7 p.m. for Corinth students. Each student must have a signed waiver before a physical can be performed. The partici-

Derby party to benefit historic Corinth home BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Seersucker and bowties, sundresses and hats will be the look of the day on the grounds of the Verandah-Curlee House for this year’s derby party. It’s set for 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, as a viewing party for the Kentucky Derby. The event returned last year for the first time since 2007 as a fundraiser in support of the historic home. “We had a great turnout and made over $7,000,” said organizer Nancy Palmer. “The weather was beautiful, and the flowers were great. We hope everybody will break out their derby attire

again this year.” The derby partiers will enjoy appetizers and drinks such as mint juleps and view the 143rd race at Churchill Downs on a large screen. The sharply dressed will have a chance to pick up prizes in a hat contest recognizing the most creative, most beautiful and largest headwear. Palmer said the friendly competition for the bestdressed is expanding this year to include a “most dapper dude” category for the guys. Derby attire is encouraged but not required.
