Shooting suspect turns himself in and mug shot from a previous arrest. His bond was set at $100,000. “In this type of situation, it’s always best when the suspect turns themselves in,” said Corinth Police Department Capt. Dell Green. “It makes the situation safer for them and the public.” Edgeston was on Mitchell Street around 4 p.m. on Friday when Patterson began shooting a firearm at the victim. The suspect in the Friday shooting on Mitchell Street has turned himself in. Police arrested Desmund Patterson, 21, of Corinth, on Monday afternoon for the attempted murder of Kelin Edgeston, 30, of Corinth. Patterson turned himself into Corinth Police around 4:15 p.m., four hours after officers released his name
the head by two bullets during the gunfire and is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries. Edgeston attempted to go to the hospital in a personal vehicle, but was assisted by an ambulance near Carter’s Fabrics on Tate Street. Patterson fled the scene before police arrived, and had been at large ever since. “These two had prior incidents over the last month or so,” added
Green. “It appears they were initially co-workers and an argument of some kind happened between them at their place of employment, and it just escalated from there.” Green said officers were able to recover the firearm Patterson used in the crime. Prior to Monday, Patterson had been arrested by Corinth police several times, mostly for misdemeanor charges and lack of paying fines.

BY ZACK STEEN Alcorn School District Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell told the Board of Education this week he is investigating the district’s walk-in freezer contract with Johnson Controls. “We (the district) are paying something like $7,000 annually for a report that tells us how much we are saving, but we’ve never been able to interpret the report very well,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been talking with (Johnson Controls) and I’m trying to get our freezers so we can monitor them ourselves.”
CARE is extending a hand to Alcorn County on improvements to the grounds at court square. The Board of Supervisors Monday evening approved accepting a $1,250 donation from Corinth-Alcorn Reaching for
Excellence for sprinkler system improvements. The county will put up $250 toward the work. “Downtown Corinth has improved dramatically over the last 10 years in its appearance,” said Joe Vann, a member of Please see DONATION | 5

With a passion for antebellum homes and gardening, Corinth native Stacy Brooks led this past weekend’s eighth installment of the Verandah-Curlee House Home and Garden Tour. “It’s important to share and educate each generation about the wonderful history of the Verandah-Curlee House and this area,” said Brooks, who acted as chairperson for the two-day event. A kindergarten teacher at First Baptist Church, the 41-year-old has been married to Keith for 16 years. They have two children, nine-year-old Madeline and sixyear-old Marleigh. A graduate of Corinth High School, Brooks also owns a small, private tutoring company.
Mitchell said he wants to cut ties with the company and he hopes they’ll do it free of charge. “I will try to have a recommendation for the board by our next meeting,” he added. Johnson Controls currently provides the monitoring service for cafeterias at each school in the district. In a March meeting, Glendale parent Jody Emerson also reported the school district has a Johnson Controls loan from 2010 for more than $1 million.
