The Alcorn County NAACP Branch is inviting the community to take part in the food, fun and fellowship of the annual Freedom Fund Banquet. The chapter’s main fundraiser is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the Easom Community Center. “I think it’s going to be one to remember,” said J.C. Hill, a member of Anderson the banquet committee. “Being at Easom this year, it’s going to give people a chance to see the facility and how well it is being taken care of.” The evening will include food by chef Ben Betts, musical performances, community service awards for those who made significant contributions in the past Please see BANQUET | 2A

Walk benefits Oasis

Rev. Roger Shock has a message for those in the area. The First United Methodist Church pastor wants people to know the downtown Corinth congregation is committed to doing the Lord’s work at a place it has called home since 1960. FUMC has been a fixture at the corner of Fillmore and Bunch streets. The church, which completed a work on a new sanctuary earlier this year and modernized the steeple in 2014, has started another building phase dealing with the back of the building. “First Methodist is a church with the heart of God and the city of Corinth,” said Shock as he overlooked construction that brought down a large wall adjacent to the church. An anonymous donation on April 5 allowed the church to bring the wall down behind the 903 Fillmore Street property FUMC had purchased. “This is a big deal,” said Shock as workers with Pittman Construction hauled

Supporters of the Oasis Medical Center gathered to champion choosing life on Saturday. The 21st annual spring Walk for Life drew members of churches from throughout Alcorn County and neighboring areas to Crossroads Regional Park. The event raised thousands of dollars in support of the center, which provides pregnancy testing, ultrasound and information for women who may be pregnant. “We’re praying for people who are so vulnerable to come in, not so we can talk them into anything but just so they can be touched by the love of Christ and get accurate information so they can make a decision,” said Martha Jobe, executive director. “But we always are praying

Youth help fix historic site BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Raking fresh mulch onto the walking trail of a Union siege lines site, Corinth students continued a project to make one of the city’s historic properties more accessible. About 10 youths worked on the project Saturday morning at the site on the southeast corner of Mississippi Highway 2 and North Polk Street. The National Park Foundation awarded a Park Stewards Grant for the project. “A lot of people don’t know that this facility is even here,” said Phillip Henson, social studies teacher at Corinth High School. “Hopefully, by them working and taking some ownership in it, they can also get the word out that the National Park

Service is more than just the interpretive center and Shiloh around here.” He estimated about 95 students have had a hand in the work on the approximately half-mile looping trail, which gives walkers a look at some preserved earthworks. The trail had become washed-out and in need of work. The project includes removing the old trail material, tree roots and other debris and installing a foot bridge, mulch and water bars for erosion prevention. “It’s a project than can keep going,” said Park Service Ranger Heather Henson. “Next year, any other high school teacher could pick this up and do this
