Eggcellent hunting Annual Easter celebration draws crowd
Sales tax drops, tourism tax rises BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Moderate temperatures and gusty spring winds made for fun egg hunting weather at Crossroads Regional Park. “It’s windy, but it’s all right. We’ve got nice weather today,” said event organizer J.C. Hill, who smiled as brightly as any of the children traipsing around the park, itching to grab up colorful eggs. The crowd for the 13th Annual Community Egg Hunt was one of serene and happy anticipation. Adults stood in line with their children for a chance to get a picture taken with the Easter Bunny. A local radio station had a live broadcast with music piped in for everyone to enjoy through loud speakers. Some people sat out on the grass to wait and some strolled the walking trail and received stickers, information, and can-

A down month for sales tax collections across the state was also felt in Corinth, although the tourism tax posted a healthy increase for the month. Sales tax collections across Mississippi were collectively down by 9.2 percent in funds returned to cities this week compared to the same month a year ago, with seven of 12 area municipalities following that trend. The latest reporting period reflects sales activity that occurred during the month of February. With a sales tax diversion for the month totaling $489,219.03, Corinth saw a decrease of about $24,000, or 4.7 percent, from a year ago. The fiscal year total, through seven months, is $3.577 million, down by 1.8 percent from the prior year. The sales tax diversion has seen a decrease for three consecutive months. City officials note the recent decreases are compared to prior months that were part of a record-setting fiscal year.
It was a better month for the 2 percent tourism tax, which generated $123,949, an increase of 15.5 percent from a year ago. It is the largest single monthly total to date for the tax on restaurants and lodging. In contrast to the decline in sales tax collections, special taxes across the state collectively posted an increase of 11 percent for the month versus a year ago. Other sales tax results from the region: • Booneville — $167,291.28 (+4%) • Burnsville — $12,920.38 (-7%) • Farmington — $2,264.34 (-12%) • Glen — $1,776.68 (+19%) • Iuka — $61,481.35 (-29%) • Kossuth — $3,157.25 (-17%) • Rienzi — $4,310.11 (+19%) • Ripley — $105,702.04 (-5%) • Tishomingo — $12,609.69 (+29%) • Tupelo — $1,631,119.28 (-5%) • Walnut — $17,214.43 (+2%)

One upcoming event seeks to saves lives and promote love. Oasis Medical Center staff and volunteers are excited about the 23rd Annual Walk for Life scheduled for Saturday, April 22, at Crossroads Regional Park. The event is one of the ministry’s biggest fund raisers. Participants raise money for Oasis by obtaining sponsors prior to the event. Proceeds go directly to the center and help Oasis continue to provide pregnancy services to Alcorn and surrounding counties at no charge to the client.
Enthusiasm appears to have been growing over the past few weeks. Oasis reports that many walkers have signed up and the center has already begun receiving donations. “It’s fun to see kids getting involved too,” said Matt Mitchell, CEO of Oasis Medical Center. Recently several children who plan to participate in the Walk, raised money by setting up a lemonade stand in Mitchell’s neighborhood. They donated their earnings to the Walk. Many local churches are supporting the event and area businesses and civic organi-

Two new items on display at the Civil War Interpretive Center have unique ties to Corinth. A 1862 photograph of Capt. William P. Jones and a 1857 pocket Bible were both donated to the National Park Service by individuals who discovered the items had connections to the Cross City. David Latch of Corinth donated the photo of Jones to the center. “Mr. Latch came in and said ‘hey, what do you think of this’,” said Park Ranger Tom Parson. “We were happy to take it, especially after we did a little research.” Jones was a schoolteacher and lived on the outskirts of Corinth before enlisting in the “Kossuth Volunteers,” Company D, 2nd (23rd) Mississippi Infantry. Parson said Jones went to a local photography studio in January 1862, then sent the photo and letter to his wife.
