Assistant Chief Chuck Hinds will retire from the Corinth Police Department on April 27.

Assistant police chief retiring BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

After three decades in law enforcement, Assistant Corinth Police Chief Chuck Hinds is feeling proudly blueblooded. “I grew up in a law enforcement family,” said Hinds, who is set to retire April 27. “I guess it’s just in your blood.” The son of a state trooper, he lived in Holly Springs until age 12, when his family moved to Corinth with a transfer for his father. His uncle was a Memphis police officer, and his sister is a patrol officer in Booneville. Carrying on the tradition, his daughter is a dispatcher. He will retire from the Corinth P.D. family with some reluctance. “I love my job. Taking that step to retire is not as easy as some people think,” said Hinds. “I’ve been a part of

this department longer than I haven’t.” The 1984 Corinth High School graduate went into the U.S. Army, serving in the infantry division and then with the military police as a civil liaison and AWOL apprehension officer. After that taste of law enforcement, he applied at Corinth P.D. in 1987 and was hired a couple of months later. In 1989, he went to the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department, followed by a year with the Fulton Police Department. In 1991, he returned to Corinth P.D. for good, and was assigned to narcotics investigations with Ralph Dance in 1992. He moved to sergeant and then training officer before becoming assistant chief in November 2014. Hinds has also served as an accident reconstructionist for the department and, in 2006,

helped launch the special response team. “This was about the time we were really seeing a lot of school violence situations around the United States,” he said. He and Dance worked on a school violence response program with the city and county schools and also shared it with neighboring school districts. “Under David Lancaster’s and Ralph Dance’s leadership, we’ve really worked at being more of a proactive department instead of a reactive department,” said Hinds. “We’ve increased our manpower, our training and our public relations with the community.” With Bowen Johnson, he helped launch the Northeast Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Center, which has provided training to officers Please see HINDS | 6A

Club bringing back Mother’s Day Brunch BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

The Boys & Girls Club of Corinth will once again honor Crossroads area mothers next month. The local club will host the second annual Mother’s Day Brunch on Saturday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Shiloh Ridge. A spring fundraiser for the club will feature a full brunch buffet provided by Duvet Catering, along with a fashion show and keynote speaker Kim Hardwick from Magnolia Regional Health Center. “We took last year’s successful event and tried to make it even better this year,” said

The Alcorn School District welcomed a new president and a new board member on Monday night. The meeting marked the first regular meeting led by president Randy Wilbanks, and also included the swearing in of new interim board member Lamar Walker. Both changes came following the resignation of third district board member Carrol Morton last month. Walker, who was appointed by the board to fill the third district seat, said he’s looking forward to serving the district. “I really appreciate everyone being here and listening in,” Walker told the crowded board

room. “I want to work together on this. It’s not just about one school. It’s about all of us working together.” Walker said he has met with principals at Kossuth, Biggersville, Rienzi and Alcorn Central already this week, and plans to visit Glendale in the future. “I want to thank the principals for allowing me to come into their schools and talk to them,” he said. A special meeting for technology department bids was set for April 18, and Walker said he plans to introduce several ideas during that session. “By law we can’t talk as a board two at a time outside of Please see DISTRICT | 2A

Parent questions student placement BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Questions about student placement was heard from several parents Monday night at the Alcorn School District Board of Education meeting. Rienzi Elementary School parent Terri Bain asked the board if a “plan of action” concerning students moving to other schools was in place. Bain’s two children are among the RES student population set to move to Biggersville Elementary School when the new school year begins on August 1. Last month the board voted 3-2 to close both RES and Glendale Elementary School.

“I’m concerned about the students that are going from Rienzi over to Biggersville and their placement in a school that has no room for them,” said Bain to the board. “Parents have gone to the school to try to figure out where our kids are going to go and nobody seems to know because y’all haven’t figured it out yet.” Bain was also concerned about lunch schedules at BES running “extremely” early. “Lunch schedules will run as normal,” said Assistant Superintendent Ritchie Williams. Bain said she and other parPlease see CONCERNS | 3A

People of the Crossroads Natalie Simmons, Kossuth Natalie Simmons is going to state. The Kossuth Elementary School fourth grader will represent the north half of the state in the Mississippi Department of Education State Reading Fair on April 19 in Jackson. After reading and creating her project on the non-fiction book “Helen Keller,” Simmons took top honors in the nonfiction category in every reading fair she entered, including the Kossuth Elementary School Reading Fair, the Alcorn School District Reading Fair and most recently, the regional reading fair at Oxford held in February. By participating in reading fairs, students often experience a deeper enjoyment for reading and develop a lifelong love of reading. Simmons is the daughter of Greg and Rhonda Simmons.

Cory Holmes, event chair and the financial administer at the area’s Boys & Girls Club administrative office. “The fashion show will also be a great improvement from last year.” Holmes said Ginger’s will offer guests a glimpse of summer fashions and trends at the Mother’s Day weekend event. The brunch will also feature several cosmetic counters as Belk representatives offer tips. Returning this year is the Mother’s Day basket raffle full of unique items and gift certificates from Crossroads area businesses and restaurants. A special presentation by Please see BRUNCH | 3A
