Property deed letters cause concern BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Some Corinth area residents have recently received letters asking them to pay substantial fees to obtain a grant deed for their property. Tax Assessor Kenneth Brawner fielded several questions about
these letters in the past week. “A lot of people are getting it confused with something governmental,” he said. “I don’t want people to think it’s a tax bill from us.” The company sending the letters, Record Transfer Services, offers to send a “property
assessment profile and complimentary grant deed” to the letter recipient at a cost of $83. But most, if not all, of this type of information can be obtained for free at county offices. “If they need information that they can get for free, there’s no need in them spending that
money,” said Brawner. The letters ask the recipients to reply by a certain date — April 25, in the case of those recently reported. This is another element of the solicitation that Brawner finds troubling. Such letters have been reported elsewhere in northeast
Mississippi and in other states during the past year. The attorneys general of at least a couple of states have pursued cases against companies offering such documents for steep fees. The letter does clearly state that the service is not associated with any government agency.

He replaces another local resident, Kristin Chittom, who took a different job in pharmaceutical sales but will still be volunteering with Relay for Life. Maness is no stranger to Relay for Life events having been involved in the Prentiss County Relay for Life during high school and two years at NEMCC while serving as vice president of Phi Theta Kappa. Commission granted Post 6 a license in March to conduct bingo games at the legion hall. “We have pretty much rebuilt the building from the ground Please see BINGO | 2A

There’s more to check out at the library than just books and computers — especially during National Library Week. Special presentations are lined up for the coming week as part of the annual obser-
vance. “It’s a time to celebrate and reflect on the services that the nation’s libraries provide,” said Corinth Librarian Brandon Lowrey. “We’re going to have several activities and Please see LIBRARY | 2A
