Two former jail workers denied allegations of mistreatment of a prisoner held by the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Depart-
ment in a recent filing in U.S. District Court. Michael Hudson and Pat Marlar, former sheriff’s department employees, filed the response to the civil action filed
by Richard Dion Drewery of Ripley. Drewery, who alleges that he was sprayed in the face and genitals with pepper spray after his arrest on a misdemeanor charge in August 2013, seeks
actual damages for medical expenses, compensatory damages for pain and suffering and emotional distress, and punitive damages. Drewery alleges excessive

Shiloh National Military Park is looking for some recruits. Officials with the park are set to host Park Day at Shiloh Battlefield and the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center on Saturday. Volunteers are asked to enlist for only a few hours as the park and center take care of some
cleaning projects. Park Day, sponsored by the Civil War Trust and the History Channel, is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Park Day is a volunteer work day around the country which brings together Civil War enthusiasts to help preserve our nation’s battlefields,” said Rachel Winters, a NPS Ranger.
In Corinth, volunteers will be working at the Contraband Camp. “All the work in Corinth will be done outside,” said Winters. “Volunteers will be cleaning the commemorative bronze statues and if we have time, they will put out new mulch around the statues.” Please see PARK | 2A

The retired teacher is a witness to the importance of the school auditorium and is urging those in the community to get behind efforts to see it repaired. “I have a love of that old building,” said Scott. “We need to support the repairing of the auditorium so it can be used for the purpose which it was built.” Proceeds from Saturday’s fundraiser will be used to

Alcorn Central Elementary School will roll out the red carpet this weekend for both their current student body and the incoming students transferring from the closing Glendale school. Set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Alcorn Central will host a Spring Carnival and welcome event on the elementary school campus. “This is something we normally do in the fall, but we decided to move it to the spring because of the warmer weather. We hope that all of our current students and parents will come out and enjoy a fun-filled day and help us raise money for the school,” said Principal John Anderson. “It will also act as a chance for current Glendale students and parents to tour the school and meet teachers, administrators and students at Alcorn Central.” The carnival will include games, inflatables, cake walk, antique cars, silent auction, face painting, concessions and a talent show, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.. Arm bands will be available for $5 during the fundrasier event. “The talent show is proving to be very popular,” he said.
“We already have 20 students signed up to participate.” The Air-Evac helicopter will also make an appearance. Those transferring from Glendale Elementary School will also get a chance mingle with Alcorn Central staff during an open house set for April 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. “It will be a meet and greet and also a chance for them to turn in their registration packets and paperwork,” said Anderson. The principal said each student currently enrolled at Glendale and Rienzi will soon be given a registration packet to complete and turn in at the school they will transfer to in August. “The open house will be the best time for those incoming students to meet Alcorn Central teachers and tour the campus,” he added. “Teachers transferring to Alcorn Central from Glen will also be here, so those younger children should feel right at home.” Anderson said his school will employee six teachers from Glen and one from Rienzi when the new school year begins. “We want this transition to be as easy as possible for the

Mitchell came up with a plan to reopen the building, which has been closed since 2010. Engineers deemed the building unsafe and school officials chained the doors in 2010. Metal plates have been added to a number of 60-foot wooden support beams which engineers said were bowing in the their report. “It would take valueness for me to tell of all the wonderful things I remember happened Please see AUDITORIUM | 2A
