MRHC gets high marks from state BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Magnolia Regional Health Center gets high marks from the state auditor in a new report on the financial condition of rural, publicly owned Mississippi hospitals. Among the 25 in Mississippi,
MRHC is one of those ranked “above the national average” for financial strength in the study, which gauged factors such as profitability, liquidity, capital structure, age of facilities and solvency. It is based on audited financial reports for 2009 through 2012.
In the immediate area, the only other facility included in the study is Tippah County Hospital in Ripley, which is one of only four that are considered “of most concern.” The auditor’s office is providing the report to each of the hospitals’ administration, legis-
lative leaders and local officials. Magnolia ranked 8th among the 15 hospitals that scored above the national average based on the financial strength index. Magnolia had a mean index of 1.23 from 2009 to 2012. Neshoba County General Hospital topped the list with a
mean of 5.6. Tippah scored an index of -2.51. “With this study, we found that while four hospitals are at risk, most are in very good financial standing and above national standards in most cases,” Please see MRHC | 2A

Green Market is set for a big season opener as part of a full weekend of activities. Crossroads Arena will be the site of some bidding and buying this weekend. Saturday will be a busy one around the facility with the Home & Outdoor Show and Auction slated for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Home & Outdoor Show will pick back up Sunday from 1-5 p.m. “The auction has already passed what we thought it would be,” said Crossroads Arena Board Chairman Dr. Hardwick Kay. Mid-South Auction & Realty is in charge of the auction end of the show. “Clay (Meeks) is a real good guy to work with,” added Kay.
Meeks is owner of the auction company. The lawn and garden type of event has 19 booths inside the facility. Equipment for the auction started coming in Monday. Items such as tractors, trucks and trailers, backhoes and mowers are just a sample of things being auctioned. On Saturday, hot dogs will be available for $1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Kids Zone is also being held during Saturday for children. “It’s going to be a good weekend to be in Corinth,” added board member Jackie Coombs. Crossroads Arena General Manager Tammy Genovese
passed along the financial numbers of the recent Brantley Gilbert concert. According to the manager, CA is looking at a net of $55,000 from the show. “Considering the size of our building, we are running neck and neck with other stops on the tour,” said Genovese. “Things went very well,” added Kay. “We had a lot of help and good coordination … we couldn’t have done this without all of those who helped.” Newsboys is the next concert slated for the multi-purpose facility. As of Wednesday, 511 tickets had been sold. The May 16 Sawyer Brown event has sold 320 tickets with advertising slated to begin today.

FARMINGTON — A Corinth woman faces a pair of drug charges after being questioned by the Alcorn Narcotics Unit. Phyllis Denise Walker, 50, of 613 Scale Street, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by officers with the unit Thursday on County Road 237. Walker “Narcotics officers stopped the car on suspicion of transporting narcotics,” said narcotics investigator Darrell Hopkins. Walker told officers she was visiting friends in the area when questioned. “Officers could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle,” added Hopkins. A search of Walker’s belongs turned up cocaine and marijuana in her purse. She was then transported to the Alcorn County Jail by the Farmington Police Department. Walker, on probation and placed on hold by the Mississippi Department of Corrections, was charged with sell of cocaine and felony possession of cocaine. Her bond was set at $7,500 by Justice Court Judge Jimmy McGee.
Local slate makes for big weekend
The charming cottage that Joshua and Brittany Bryant call home is one of three historic homes featured on the 6th Annual Corinth Home & Garden Tour taking place today and Saturday. Built in the 1930s, the home at 712 Main St. was purchased in 1938 by former Corinth Chief of Police Ed Allen. “The history on the house said the Allens spent pretty much their entire life in the home,” said Joshua. “During the Great Depression, the family would shake the pecans off 5 trees in the back yard and use the money made from those pecans to buy school clothes for their children for the next year.” In the 1970s, the Allens added a carport and a room on the
