Today’s Highlight in History On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany, saying, “The world must be made safe for democracy.” (Congress declared war four days later.)
On this date In 1792, Congress passed the Coinage Act, which authorized establishment of the U.S. Mint. In 1800, Ludwig van Beethoven premiered his Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21, in Vienna. In 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and most of his Cabinet fled the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, because of advancing Union forces. In 1932, aviator Charles A. Lindbergh and John F. Condon went to a cemetery in The Bronx, New York, where Condon turned over $50,000 to a man in exchange for Lindbergh’s kidnapped son. (The child, who was not returned, was found dead the following month.) In 1942, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra recorded “American Patrol” at the RCA Victor studios in Hollywood. In 1956, the soap operas “As the World Turns” and “The Edge of Night” premiered on CBS-TV. In 1968, the sciencefiction film “2001: A Space Odyssey,” produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, had its world premiere in Washington, D.C. In 1974, French President Georges Pompidou, 62, died in Paris.

Across the Region Booneville Burnsville man charged in Pinehill Road burglary BOONEVILLE — A burglary reported on Pinehill Road has resulted in the arrest of a Burnsville man. Booneville Police arrested John Allen Huggins, 20, of 6 CR 349, Burnsville, on a charge of one count burglary of a commercial building, said Police Chief Michael Ramey. Huggins is accused of breaking in a building on Pinehill Road Monday, he said. His bond was set at $5,000. In a separate, unrelated arrest, Booneville Police arrested Richard Allen Crosslin, 29, of 91 Hwy. 365, Booneville, on a charge of one count possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. This arrest was the result of a traffic stop on Independent
Street. His bond was set at $2,500.
Adamsville Legion Post 97 raising funds to restore park ADAMSVILLE, Tenn. — A need to restore the Adamsville Veterans Memorial Park has the local American Legion Post 97 trying to raise money for the project. The estimated cost of the restoration is between $32,000 and $35,000. The park was built in 1991 in memory of those killed in action as well as soldiers that were in World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Restoration plans include replacing the walkway in the park and adding roses and shrubs to improve the appearance inside the park. Bricks engraved with the name of a veteran can be
bought by calling Bob May at 731-607-1918. The bricks will include the name of the veteran, branch of service, rank and area of service. A 5K run will be held Saturday, May 13 in Adamsville. The run will begin and end at The Marty - Adamsville Community Center. Registration forms are available by calling May. He is the commander of the American Legion Post 97.
Tupelo Parkway to present junior ranger program TUPELO — The Natchez Trace Parkway invites children and their families to “Beavers: Making a Splash” a special Junior Ranger program at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Parkway Visitor Center. Beavers are incredible animals that can
turn the tiniest stream into a flooded wetland, creating their own habitat. Join a park ranger for this 45-minute program to learn how beavers are perfectly adapted for this difficult job and make your own craft beaver to take home. This program is free and ideal for children 7 to 12 years old, but everyone is welcome. The Parkway Visitor Center is located at milepost 266 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, near Tupelo, Mississippi. Ribbon cutting for Farmington ‘Little Free Library’ Farmington Mayor Dale Fortenberry joined Girl Scout Troop number 23806 for a ribbon cutting. Junior Girl Scouts Ciara Smith (from left), Chelsey Thrasher, Mayor Fortenberry, Kacey Radtke and Dayla Wright turned out early Saturday morning to officially open the new Little Free Library the young scouts built and installed as part of their Bronze award project. The requirement was the project had to be permanent, sustainable and would serve the community. Located at Farmington Town Hall, the project will provide free books for children in the Farmington area. The tiny library will be part of a fast-growing non-profit organization that has created a database of free libraries where the idea is “take a book, leave a book.” People can borrow or donate a book at any time of day.
