Thursday night, board members officially accepted the resignation of former board president Carroll Morton and appointed Alcorn County minister Lamar Walker to the position.

“In my opinion, taking Mr. Morton’s place is a big step,” said fifth district board member Randy Wilbanks. “I think the world of him and enjoyed my time working with him on this board.”

Morton ressigned following a 3-2 vote to close Glendale and Rienzi elementary schools earlier this month. Wilbanks assumed the role of president, and on Thursday officially led the board in that

The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department continues an investigation after an Alcorn County man was shot in Alcorn County about 12:45 p.m. Thursday and a person of interest remains in custody. Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell said the ordeal unfolded when the male gunshot victim walked to a house on Alcorn County Road 702 to seek help.

Student innovation

Professional and local chili cookers will light their fires on Saturday at the 9th annual Crossroads Chili Cook-Off and event goers may get the best end of the deal. Locals will be able to taste all prepared traditional red chili in the People’s Choice competition slated to begin at noon at the downtown Corinth Depot on Fillmore Street. A $5 donation to Havis’ Kids will allow individuals to enter the all-you-can-eat chili tasting event and receive a kit with spoons, napkins and bowls. Also inside each kit will include a judge’s ticket. The person will then need to leave the ticket with the cook of their favorite chili. “Folks should definitely come to the cook-off with a big appetite,” said event chair Steve Knight. “So far we have around 30 cookers signed up — some from as far away as Illinois and Indiana. There will also be

Corinth School District Food Service Director Margaret Simpson has been in charge of planning student meals at all three Corinth city schools since 1999. “It is my responsibly that our menus stay up to standards set by the state and that students get a good and balanced meal,” said the 63-year-old. Originally from Tupelo, Simpson is the mother of three daughters and seven grandchildren. “I love spending time with my family and trying to keep up with my grandchildren,” she said. An active member of First Baptist Church in Corinth, she also enjoys gardening and working outside.

Drastic cuts to state education funding force reductions in class time for students. The Corinth School District cuts two days from the calendar. The Alcorn School District goes to four days per week for the final month of classes.

The Caterpillar Foundation provides a $5,000 grant for improvements at the Corinth Coliseum-Civic Center. The funds match a grant from the Ben and Corrine Pierce Foundation and will combine with other funds for renovations to the historic venue.
