Circuit judge grants defense motion Man accused in shooting to get psychiatric evaluation BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
A defendant in the February 2016 shooting death of a convenience store clerk will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. In Alcorn County Circuit Court, Judge Paul Funderburk on Thursday granted the defense’s motion requesting a psychiatric evaluation for Brooklyn Traylor,
who was 17 years old at the time of the death of Kris Ledlow, 43, at the MAPCO Express gas station on Highway 72. He faces a charge of capital murder. The ruling was based on review of medical records from Region IV Mental Health Services and records from Alcorn County Youth Court, which also contain
“The state will argue strongly against, however, any insanity defense or any argument that he is incompetent to stand trial at the appropriate time … but we have no objection to the evaluation itself, as we believe it will be favorable to the state.” David Daniels Assistant District Attorney

Groups celebrate ‘Light It Up Blue’ BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
April is Autism Awareness Month and two Crossroads area groups will celebrate it with several special events. Reconnect 4 Autism will team up from Region IV Mental Health for a school-related project on Monday to raise funds for locals with Autism. “We’re calling it Blue Day,” said Reconnect 4 Autism founder Brad Essary. “School staff will be able to pay $5 to wear blue jeans that day. They will also wear blue Autism awareness shirts.” Local schools set to participate include Corinth city and Alcorn County schools, Tishomingo and Prentiss county schools and Booneville city schools. “Blue is Autism Speaks’ signature color – ‘Light It Up Blue’ – so blue jeans and blue shirts are perfect ways to raise awareness in our schools,” added Essary. The local group will also host a Sensory Friendly showing of the “Smurfs The Lost Village” on April 15 at 9:30 a.m. at the Malco Corinth Cinema 10. “Another perfect way to raise awareness ... the Smurfs are blue which adds another connection to Autism,” said Essary. Other upcoming Sensory Friendly films include “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” on May 13 and “Cars 3” on June 24. The films are shown in a

Tree planting honors park commissioner BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
James A. “Jim” Oaks was more than a familiar face at the city park. Family members recall that even the squirrels loved him and would eat peanuts right out of his hand. “He had such a kind and gentle nature that even the smallest creatures felt safe around him,” said daughter
Tracy Gardner. “If you had to sum up his legacy in two words, it would be ‘love’ and ‘service.’ “ The CorinthAlcorn County Oaks Parks and Recreation Commission will honor the longtime park commissioner with
a tree planted in his honor. A ceremony is set for April 29 at Crossroads Regional Park, with the time to be announced later. The landscaper was a lover of trees and spent 25 years as a member of the park commission, serving from 1983 to 2008. “The way he felt about trees, we feel that would be the greatest honor we could be-
stow on him is to plant a tree in his name,” said Butch Carmichiel, chairman of the park commission. “We’re going to put a plaque up and dedicate the tree to him for his years of service.” Oaks was instrumental in helping with some of the park’s deteriorating trees and put many hours into the effort Please see OAKS | 2A

Those in attendance are encouraged to move around if needed as well as sing and dance along to the movie. “The shows are open to all abilities,” said Essary. “Reconnect and our sponsors provide the opportunity free of charge to children 16 and under as well as individuals with disability of any age.” The Austin’s Shoes Reconnect for Autism Color Run is another event slated for April. In it’s third year, the run will move to Shiloh Ridge Golf Please see AUTISM | 2A
