Weather service predicts flash floods BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

The clear-blue skies of the last few days will likely disappear today as a round of spring showers and thunderstorms move into the Crossroads area.

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Flash Flood Watch today through Thursday night. “This is anticipated to be a power subtropical front set to produce widespread show-

ers and thunderstorms across much of the mid-south. An unusually moist airmass will move into the region, fueling several rounds of showers and thunderstorms,” said the NWS. “Conditions may develop that

could lead to flash flooding.” Rain should begin after 1 p.m. today with periods of heavy rain expected later in the day. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent with up to four inches of rainfall expected in some areas.

Showers are expected to continue throughout the day on Thursday with new rainfall amounts of one to two more inches. Please see FLOOD | 3A

The Alcorn County school board recently voted against an amendment to an employee rights related policy. Among the crowded March 14 agenda included the approval to amend a policy regarding termination of non-licensed employees per Mississippi Code. “Our policy currently allows non-licensed employees to request and be granted a hearing by the board following their termination by a principal or superintendent,” said board attorney Arch Bullard. “Mississippi is an at will state which means non-licensed individuals have no right under statue. Amending this policy would conform with the state statue.” Although the board has no right to rehire a non-certified employee, the board policy does allow an terminated employee the right to ask for a hearing. If board members voted against this amendment, it would have stripped that right from noncertified employees. Bullard said he’s never seen such a policy by any board. “It’s been in place for awhile, it looks like,” he added. “But I was recently asked whether it Please see POLICY | 3A

BY JEBB JOHNSTON Crossroads Museum is featuring some of the important women of Mississippi’s past. Through April 18, the museum is hosting a traveling exhibit from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Museum Division highlighting the achievements of Mississippi women. Ten interpretive panels feature 32 of the state’s notable women in the arts, the civil rights movement, sports, literature, voting rights, education, government and law. “It’s a nice exhibit that gives insight into Mississippi women who were trailblazers during their time,” said Museum Director Brandy Steen. “You have authors like Eudora Welty and performers like

The new owners of the Downtown Motel want to reshape the character of the property with a shift from motel rooms to apartment units. The proposal cleared its first hurdle Monday with approval of a variance from the city’s board of adjustment to allow residential use of the property, which is zoned C-1 commercial. The panel’s recommendation now goes to the Board of Mayor and

TISHOMINGO COUNTY — More jobs are coming to the Crossroads area. The Mississippi Development Authority announced Tuesday manufacturer Comfort Revolution will add 50 new jobs and invest another $1.5 million into it’s Belmont operations. The producer of high-end mattresses, mattress toppers and pillows provides sleep products to companies like Sealy from it’s Tishomingo County location. “Job creation is critical to a vibrant economy, and Mississippi has seen significant growth in that area this year. I thank Comfort Revolution for continuing that momentum with this expansion and wish the company many more successful years in Tishomingo County,” said Gov. Phil Bryant in a MDA press release. Comfort Revolution moved it’s operations to Belmont in 2012 and quickly announced the creation of 200 to 300 jobs. The 50 jobs announced Tuesday will bring total employment to 250 at the plant. After working in marine sales at Pickwick for more than 37 years, Memphis native Bill Avery retired and is now busier than ever. “My wife told me I couldn’t sit around the house,” he said. “I always loved the outdoors, so I decided to start taking pictures.” The 77-yearold has been shooting photos for six years and is currently a Daily Corinthian contributor. “I enjoy playing with lighting in my photography,” Avery said. “The different techniques that can be used to create color in a photo fascinates me.” Fifty-two years ago, Avery said, “I married the love of my life. The first day I laid my eyes on Vicki, I knew I was going to marry her.” The couple have two grown children and four grandchildren.
