Loan repayment clears air between districts BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

A long standing rift between Alcorn County’s Second District and Fourth District came to an end this week. The Board of Supervisors vot-

ed to allow the Second District to repay the Fourth District the remaining balance of $40,000 on an 11-year-old loan between the two. “When I first began attending board meetings last year, I saw

the unwillingness of the second district to pay back something that was taken from the fourth district,” said current Second District Supervisor James Voyles. “I didn’t even know what the money was for, but I knew

the money had to be paid back and the relationship between the two districts had to be fixed.” Originally $60,000, the board first approved the loan in 2005 between then Second District supervisor Danny Crotts

and Fourth District supervisor Gary Ross. The terms of the loan stated funds were to be repaid as soon as they were available. Please see LOAN | 5A

Big Mouths: Pro eaters return for festival BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Major League Eaters are getting the chance to take another bite out of Corinth. The Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau paved the way for the weapons of mass digestion to return on July 9 as part of the 29th Annual Slugburger Festival & World Slugburger Eating Championship. “Major League Eating is like the NBA and NFL in that it has the highest caliber of competitive eaters,” said Main Street Corinth Director Brent Johnson. “Our competition puts Corinth on a national stage and exposes all of the city.” Major League Eating’s top competitive eaters burst on the scene four years ago to chew up the rest of the field. Matt “Megatoad” Stonie — currently MLE’s top ranked eater — won the first three World Slugburger Eating Championships. Stonie won titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He set the world slugburger eating record with 43 in 2014 as he bested Joey “Jaws” Chestnut by one. Chestnut claimed his first World Slugburger Eating Championship last year by downing 33 in the 10-minute contest. Stonie skipped last year’s event after winning the 2015 Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest for the first time. Confirmation from MLE’s

Official signup for the Slugburger Championship begins May 2 and must be done through MLE.

The son of a former, six-term Corinth mayor, John D. Mercier is writing his own history. The 50-yearold has owned OfficePRO in downtown Corinth for more than 24 years. In that time, he’s done a little bit of everything from making deliveries, putting together furniture and selling copy paper. “My favorite thing about this business has always been helping customers solve problems,” he said. The father to John Witt, 16, and Hope, 12, Mercier enjoys camping, kayaking and bluegrass music. “I take a trip to the Arkansas Folk Festival in Mountain View, Ark., each year just to camp out and relax.” he said. A former board member of Main Street Corinth and The Alliance, Mercier’s mother, Helen, was a former editor of The Commercial Appeal and a staff writer of the Daily Corinthian.
