Spring Fling keeps retirees in the know

School board to fill seat

BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Helpful information is ready to be given to senior adults. Retirees can get helpful facts during the 2016 Spring Fling on Thursday, April 14, at Mississippi State Extension Center. “Reservations are required and can be made by calling The Alliance,” said Tom Chartres, member of the Community Development Council. “Doors will not open until 10 a.m. and we ask our attendees to wait until then to come to avoid having to stand outside.” Numerous speakers are scheduled to share valuable figures with those who attend, according to Chartres. “There will be all sorts of information,” he said. Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell is slated to launch the senior citizen/law enforcement consortium TRIAD. TRIAD is the agreement of law enforcement agencies in a county and older or retired persons in the community to work together. The partnership addresses crime issues which affect older citizens and methods that may expedite delivery of law enforcement services. “It is a big deal for us to get the TRIAD program back,” added Chartres. Crystal Starling, Alcorn County Deputy Circuit Clerk, is also slated to talk with attendees. “Anyone who wants to register to vote or needs to update any voting information can do so at the Spring Fling,” said Chartres of the event in its sixth year. Ginger Dillinger is scheduled to address the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicare Part D assistance. Representatives with Magnolia Regional Health Center, Please see RETIREES | 3

is currently being leased from the county to the foundation. “It’s a 198-year lease and gives the foundation the exclusive right to use, control, operate and supervise the area,” said Davis. However, Voyles believes the removal of a building from the property would be a breach of contract. “It’s the management to maintain the buildings, not tear them down,” he said. “It’s very disappointing to see the state that they are in. I understand the dollars might not be there for them, but I feel like we can get community support and fix the issues.”

The Alcorn County Board of Education will hold a special meeting next week to appoint a new board member to fill the vacant Third District seat. The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 31, at 5 p.m. inside the district office on Manpower Road. Former District Three school board member Carroll Morton, who was also board president, resigned earlier this month following a 3-2 vote that resulted in the closure of Glendale and Rienzi elementary schools at the end of the school year. “We will officially accept Carroll’s resignation and also consider those candidates interested in the Third District position,” said current board president Randy Wilbanks. “The board plans to vote for someone during the meeting to fill the vacancy.” Any Third District resident interested in being considered for the position should submit a resume or general letter of interest to board clerk Ginger Mills at the district office. “We wanted to make sure we had someone in place before the next regular scheduled board meeting on April 11,” added Wilbanks. The Third District represents the campuses of Biggersville and Rienzi. Morton is the second Alcorn School District board member to resign in recent months. James Voyles, who held the District Two board seat, resigned in December after he

Jacinto Foundation members want the Calton house torn down. It’s a deteriorating building to the east of the Jacinto Courthouse. However, Alcorn County supervisors say more can be done to save the non-historical structure.

Supervisors: Don’t tear down house BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

The removal of a deteriorating non-historical building near the Jacinto Courthouse has been put on hold. The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors on Monday voted to not allow the Jacinto Foundation to remove the aging structure at this time. Although the issue was not on the agenda nor was a foundation representative present, the unanimous vote came at the end of the lengthy meeting when Supervisor James Voyles began the discussion. “I am in objection to removing the house,” said Voyles. “I feel like there’s a lot that can

be done to save the property, before we result to having it removed. I think we should meet with (the foundation) to talk about what else can be done.” Earlier this month, Jacinto Foundation Executive Director Beth Whitehurst asked the board for their blessing to remove the old neighboring structure commonly known as the Calton house, even though, she said board approval isn’t required. According to Whitehurst, the state has determined that the house does not have historical significance, and therefore can be removed. Board attorney Bill Davis on Monday said the property

For LeAnn Peters Freeman, owning her own business is freedom. “I enjoy owning my own business because it gives me the opportunity to be more involved daily in the lives of my family,” she said. “I also love having the opportunity to meet customers and interact with them on a more personal level. Some I have gotten to know very well. At the end of the day, they are more to me than just customers – they have become friends. I couldn’t imagine a day going by that I didn’t have my business. It’s a privilege to be able to help those who come to see us.” Owner of ‘Hot Spot – The Cool Stop’ since October of 2012, the 35-year-old Kossuth native is the mother of two boys, Trevin Humbers and Zachary Freeman, and the wife of Jodie Freeman.
