Local jobless rate near state’s lowest BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County unemployment hit 6.5 percent in January, placing the county in the state’s top 10 for the month. The rate compares to 6.2 percent in December, 7 percent

a year ago and 9.9 percent in January 2013. Mississippi’s unadjusted rate for the month was 7.8 percent, while the U.S. rate was 6.1 percent in unadjusted figures, down from 7 percent in January. The Mississippi Department

of Employment Security used revised methods in calculating the January figures, which are not strictly comparable to prior years. Prior year figures are currently being revised with the new methodology. Alcorn County had 81 ini-

tial claims for unemployment insurance during the month, compared to 88 a year earlier. Continued claims numbered 476, compared to 711 a year earlier. Benefits paid in Alcorn County during the month totaled $70,529, compared to

$110,908 a year earlier. The county had 14,330 employed and 1,000 unemployed during the month. Alcorn County ranked 10th among the state’s 82 counties. Please see JOBLESS | 3A

BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Presented with the Dubar Rowland Award by the Mississippi Historical Society during their annual meeting, Rosemary Taylor Williams of Corinth was honored for her lifelong contributions to the preservation, study and interpretation of Mississippi history. The prestigious award memorializes Dunbar Rowland, the first director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. As chair of the Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission since 1993, Williams has served as the community coordinator with the National Park Service and blazed the trail in establishing and funding the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center – a unit of Shiloh National Military Park. Her preservation work has included the restoration of the historic Oak Home, the Coliseum Civic Center in downtown Corinth, other historic buildings and the Civil War Contraband Camp of which she played a key role. For eight years, she served on the Civil War Trust board of Please see HISTORY | 2A

MICHIE, Tenn. — Carson Herrin was a kid with a big heart who loved sports. The 13-year-old Michie Elementary School student is making an impact in both even after passing away after an ATV accident in late July. “Sports were everything to him,” said Carson’s father, Kevin as he looked for ways to honor his son. Kevin Herrin formed the Carson Herrin Athletic Memorial Program (CHAMP) as a way for his son to be remembered. Thus far, just over $30,000 has been raised for CHAMP. “I was trying to do something positive in the situation,” said Kevin. “I didn’t know what we would use the money for.” Michie coach Michael Cleary came up with the idea for a football field house for the Blue Devils. “Once the weather breaks, we will start taking bids,” said Herrin. The field house will bear the name of Carson Herrin.

Carson’s impact doesn’t end there. While participating in the junior pro football league in Adamsville, Carson felt compelled to donate his old cleats to kids who didn’t have any of their own. Kevin Herrin is set to carry on his son’s goal. “I noticed while coaching Carson’s team that some of the equipment wasn’t in good shape,” said Kevin. “I want to be able to replace all of the football equipment at the junior pro level.” Herrin plans to get with the organizers of Tennessee leagues in McNairy and Hardin counties along with Alcorn County officials to see what is needed. “I want to take care of our local community first,” he said. Bowler throws first perfect game BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Collin Dildy had been in the position before. This time as he stared down 10 pins from 60 feet away, all he was thinking about was hitting his mark. The 25-year-old Plaza Lanes employee did just that in bagging his his first perfect game. “It was on my mind a little bit,” said Dildy, who had rolled a 298 two weeks before reaching bowling perfection on March 9. “The

whole bowling alley had stopped to watch.” Dildy wasn’t about to let another 300 game slip away as he prepared to roll his 12th strike. “The last time someone was talking to me,” he said. “This time, I was concentrating on making the shot.” Perfection isn’t as simple as just throwing a ball down the lane, according to veteran bowler and Plaza Lanes owner David Curry. “People throw six or seven strikes and they start think-

ing 300,” said Curry. “You don’t come to the bowling alley thinking about a 300 game … it takes 12 really good balls.” And some breaks. “It takes a little luck,” added Dildy with a smile. Dildy, who was bowling in the Monday Night Major League with Wendy’s Baconators teammates Ronnie Smith, Bill Howell and Curry, had to sweat it out around 15 minutes in bePlease see BOWLER | 3A
