An early morning crash in Alcorn County has claimed the life of one woman and injured another. Peggy Phillips, 63, of Booneville was pronounced dead at Magnolia Regional Health Center, where she was transported following the crash around 7:30 a.m. on Mississippi Highway 2
approximately a half mile east of the Tippah County line. Her passenger, Julie Smith, 45, of Guntown, was transported to MRHC where she was listed in stable condition Friday afternoon. Mississippi Highway Patrol Staff Sgt. Criss Turnipseed said Phillips was eastbound on Highway 2 in a 1995 Mercury passenger car when it appears she crossed over into the
westbound lane and hit a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox head on. The driver of the Equinox, 41-year-old Arlene Settle of Corinth, was uninjured. Phillips and Smith were not wearing seatbelts, said Turnipseed. Settle was wearing her seatbelt. The crash remains under investigation by the highway patrol.
Battlefield seeks Park Day volunteers The Corinth Battlefield Unit of Shiloh National Military Park will host National Park Day 2015 at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center on Saturday, March 28. National Park Day is co-sponsored by the Civil War Trust and The History Channel. For 19 years this annual event has brought supporters from around the country to the nation’s battlefields in an effort to preserve and maintain these historical treasures. These special volunteers dedicate time and energy to help steward these National Park sites for generations to come. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers, working alongside Shiloh rangers, will perform light gardening work as well as clean the commemorative bronze features located along the Interpretive Center’s front walkway. All volunteers receive a free Park Day t-shirt and patch courtesy of the Civil War Trust. Volunteers should bring work Please see PARK | 2

BY JEBB JOHNSTON Alcorn County deputies discovered an indoor marijuana grow after responding to a disturbance call, according to the Alcorn Narcotics Unit. The unit also reported a separate arrest in the Kossuth area. Michael Copening, 46, of 425 County Road 301, Corinth, was arrested Thursday and charged with manufacturing marijuana as well as several misdemeanor offenses — disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and family disturbance. Bond was set at $5,000. Deputies responded to a disturbance at the County Road 301 residence and observed a fight between Copening and a female, said Narcotics Officer Darrell Hopkins. As they separated the two, they observed marijuana plants growing in the residence and called the narcotics unit to the scene. After obtaining a search warrant, officers found marijuana plants, scales, grow lights, marijuana seeds and
other items used in marijuana production. In a separate case on Friday, Faron S m i t h , Copening 59, of 88 County Road 614, Corinth, was arrested and charged with felony possession of metham- Smith phetamine. Bond was set at $5,000. Officers stopped a vehicle driven by Smith in connection with an investigation during the past few weeks of the sale of methamphetamine in the Kossuth area, said Hopkins. While speaking to the driver, officers spotted a methamphetamine pipe in the vehicle. A further search revealed several items used to sell and inject methamphetamine and two bags of the drug.
