School bus, DUI suspect collide BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The quick reaction of a Corinth School District bus driver prevented any injuries in a Wednesday morning accident in front of Corinth High School.

“If the bus driver hadn’t taken the action he did, he would have hit the vehicle dead-on,” said Captain Landon Tucker with the Corinth Police Department. Brett Butler, 43, of Corinth, was dropping his child off at

CHS when he turned in front of the bus, which was heading north on Harper Road. The bus hit the vehicle on the passenger side quarter panel. “The bus driver did a good job of avoiding the car,” added

Tucker of the accident ,which happened around 8 a.m. Butler was charged with driving under the influence and child endangerment. Butler’s blood alcohol level was .24 – three times over the legal limit.

Only one person was in Butler’s vehicle, while two children were on the school bus. Also assisting at the wreck scene were Lt. Lane Fowler, Sgt. Chad Harville and officer Jeremy Barnes.

Storm warning brings flooding BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

On the heels of another winter storm, heavy rainfall created flooding issues throughout the city on Wednesday. Street Commissioner Philip Verdung said his crews were out in the streets all day trying to manage the known areas prone to flooding. “Because of the constant rain, ice and snow we have had over the last few weeks, the ground has remained mostly saturated,” said Verdung. “We haven’t been able to catch a break.” Several roads were barricaded off during the peak of the rainfall, while city employees were seen working to help move clogged water in drains in the downtown area. Verdung said he had been preparing for these two weather events for several days.

“We saw the weather and knew we would be getting a lot of rain followed quickly by ice and snow,” he said. “We’ve been working and planning and it’s not over. I’m worried this may end up being one of toughest storms as far as we’re concerned. We’ll definitely be up all night.” The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect through noon today bringing the threat of more winter weather, including ice and sleet and snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches. On Oak Lane, neighbors have been airing concerns of flooding issues for months. “When it barely rains, we have problems,” said resident Josh Steen. “It’s beyond time that something is done.” Verdung addressed the issue quickly.

Heavy rainfall Wednesday caused flooding issues on Oak Lane in Corinth. “There are several projects we are still working on, and one is the flooding issue around Oak Lane. We are aware of the issue and have a fix on the way,” he said. “We also have a issue

recent winter weather and extreme cold. Dozens of minor potholes have formed on busy city road-

in the Tishomingo and Washington Street area that is also about to be fixed.” Heavy rainfall and flooding only causes more trouble on roads already worn out from

K.C. Arnold is ready to give special needs adults a night they won’t forget. The Corinth native has organized “Jesus Prom” to give mentally and physically disabled adults something they might have never experienced before. “I got involved with it in Lexington, Kentucky,” said Arnold. “It was the most rewarding thing I have done.” Southland Christian Church started the event based on Luke 14:12-14 which states: Then he turned to his host. “When you put on a luncheon or a banquet,” he said, “don’t invite your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back, and that will be your only reward. Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you for inviting those who could not repay you.” “Most special needs adults didn’t go to a main stream

school or to the prom,” said Arnold. “Society tends to forget about them … we want to love on them during prom and let them have a great night.” “Jesus Prom” will be held Saturday, March 7 at Crosswind Ministry. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with prom photos taken. “Different churches are coming together to make it happen,” said Arnold. “Everyone is excited and wants to be involved.” Following the photo time, there will be a dinner and games for those attend. A deejay will also be on hand with plenty of music for dancing. The age limit is 18 and up and there is no cost to attend. “It will be a lot of fun,” said Arnold. “It’s amazing to see all of the fun they have.”

Newspapers buzz about the rambling speech delivered by the newly inaugurated Vice President Andrew Johnson. Prescribed whiskey for a cold, a drunken VP angers many in his polarizing address.
