Sportsplex goes to auction block BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
A Corinth fixture appears to be coming to an end. The Corinth YMCA/Sportsplex is set to be sold to the highest bidder on Friday.
RREF RB Acquisitions, LLC has assigned to RREF RB SBLMS, LLC the deed of the Sportsplex. The property and all improvements located thereon will to be auctioned from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the front steps
of the Alcorn County Courthouse after default was made on a loan. During its almost 70 years in Corinth, the YMCA/Sportsplex influenced the lives of countless young people through its many
programs. In September of 1945, a resolution was passed seeking to incorporate as the Young Men’s Christian Association of Corinth. On Feb. 23 of the following year, a charter was granted
from the Southern Area Council of the YMCA and the National Council of the YMCA as the Corinth Y was officially born. In more recent years, the Corinth Y became the Sportsplex.
Winter weather knocks NWS: Another garbage service off track round on the way BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
County garbage collection is getting back on schedule this week after truck troubles and winter storms combined to knock the service off track. A couple of trucks being out of commission alone would have been enough to cause serious issues for the county’s
sanitation service, but the county also faced repeated winter storms, and garbage collection fell behind. “We should get back on schedule and want to apologize for the inconvenience it has caused people in the county,” said Board of Supervisors President Lowell Hinton. “I think probably all five of us
have gotten phone calls.” All three trucks were back operational Monday morning. County employees who don’t usually deal with sanitation pitched in to help get garbage collected while the trucks were down. The county is currently lookPlease see BOARD | 2

Winter isn’t ready to take a break. On Monday, the Corinth Street Department was getting ready for round four, which will see another winter storm bring the potential for significant sleet and minor snow accumulations Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the
Memphis office of the National Weather Service. “We had cleaned up our equipment and put it away,” said Street Commissioner Philip Verdung. “We’re getting it back out again.” With the salt and sand supplies replenished, trucks will be ready to hit the street if needed. “It looks like it’s going to rain Please see WEATHER | 2
‘Images to Poetry’: Group hosts writing workshop BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com
“That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall, looking as if she were alive. I call that piece a wonder now; Fra Pandolf’s hands worked busily a day, and there she stands. Will’t please you sit and look at her?” – ‘My Last Duchess’ by Robert Browning Transforming pictures into words, the Crossroads Poetry Project will host its sixth poetry writing workshop from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, March 7 at the Corinth Public Library. Taught by instructor Susan Bailey, the workshop, titled “Images to Poetry,” will focus on translating that which is seen into that which is written. “The images will be artwork by local artist Jaylene Whitehurst which will hang in the library’s conference room for the month of March,” said Autry Davis, president of the Crossroads Poetry Project. “We hope to have a large turnout on Saturday.” According to Davis, it was a casual conversation with a friend which led to the development of the workshop’s theme. “Jaylene and I had discussed the idea about three years ago and knew Susan was interested in doing a workshop for us,” he said.
“She brought up the idea of using images to write poetry – the very same concept we had discussed. So, when we got ready to put together the workshops for the season, we decided to add it to the schedule.” Popular with students from city and county schools, the workshop is open to everyone in the community. With a myriad of colorful paintings from which to choose, poets are sure to find a piece which resonates with them and sparks their creativity. “These are all my works from the last few years,” said Jaylene Whitehurst, an avid painter and art enthusiast. “I tried to bring a variety of paintings for points of connection. Some pieces will be recognizable images while others will be purely abstract.” Whitehurst said she was intrigued by the idea of creating poetry from artistic influence. “We have a visceral response to color and shape,” she said. “I wanted to give the writers something they could really dip their pens into.” Using an object from a painting as their starting point, students will expand and develop their ideas from there. “I’m going to go with the traditional Robert Browning “My
