Farmington residents Jesse and Rebekah Foster received a $680 electric bill recently. “That’s more than our house payment,” Jesse said. The couple says their bill is normally high in the winter, but never this high. “For the last six years, our bills have always been high during the winter months ... and we
don’t do anything different,” a concerned Jesse added. “Then in March and April our bill always go back to normal.” The Fosters aren’t alone. ACE Power Company has been receiving calls from customers complaining about their higher than normal bills for several weeks. “The cold weather is the main reason customers have been receiving higher bills recently,”
said Jason Grisham, manger of engineering at ACE. “As far as low temperatures go, we haven’t had a December, January and February like this in years.” ACE Power Company receives its power from TVA. West coast family adopts local canine BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Khloe traveled a long way to find her fur-ever home. The nine-month-old Newfoundland mix wandered into the yard of a Wenasoga resident in September 2013. After a ride in the Corinth animal control vehicle, the collar-less dog was dropped off at the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter. “We didn’t know what breed she was at first,” said Phyllis Driver, recuse relations volunteer at the shelter. “Her face looked like a chow. She had long hair and a small body.”
Driver is in charge of listing all available shelter animals on Facebook and the various other recuse websites. In order to write descriptions of an animal, she must first spend time with the animal – her favorite part of the job. “Beautiful, loving and very gentle. More interested in people then other dogs,” Driver said as she remembered what she had written about Khloe. Legendary basketball coach passes away BY JEFF YORK For the Daily Corinthian
Coach James Horton attends a recent McNairy Central Sports Hall of Fame banquet with Neal Walker, a former basketball player for Horton who remains McNairy Central’s all-time leading scorer.
A true basketball legend has been laid to rest. Coach James Arthur Horton, who laid the foundation for an outstanding basketball tradition at Corinth High School, recently passed away after a short illness. Horton, 72, a star high school basketball player at Ramer High School in the 50s, came to CHS in 1966 and immediately had success with a winning season in his first year. He played college basketball at Memphis State University (now University of Memphis) before going into coaching.

Former Superintendent of Schools Eugene Doran hired Horton to become the first basketball only coach at CHS. Johnny Plummer, the coach prior to Horton, was also the head baseball coach. Tom Rogers, who played for Horton at CHS and served as a school board member for seven years, was one of three people asked to speak at his funeral. “When he passed away, we not only lost our coach, but our best friend, coach, mentor and second father for most of us,” Rogers said. He left both Corinth and McNairy Central High School as the leader in coaching wins at
the end of his tenure at each school. Horton held many CHS coaching records for years. He still holds the school record for 11 county tournament titles in 14 seasons, eight consecutive winning seasons and carried the Warriors to their first-ever trip to the state championship in 1970. He is tied with David Robbins for longest tenure (14 seasons) as the Warriors coach. “Coach Horton loved Corinth and Corinth loved Coach Horton,” said Rogers. “He wanted us to be good basketball players, but that was secondary to Please see HORTON | 6A
On this day in history 150 years ago U.S. Grant is given the rank of Lieutenant General. The only men to hold this rank prior to Grant were George Washington and Winfield Scott. Scott, a hero of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, was given a brevet rather than a full promotion.
