Crossroads area residents woke up to a winter wonderland Thursday morning. Meteorologists may have had the timing off by a few hours, but they were correct in the amount of snow the area might receive. Downtown residents reported seeing 2 inches of snow fall, while folks in the southern parts of the county reported more than 3 inches of the white stuff. As businesses closed across the city, classes were canceled at all area schools as kids around the region celebrated their first “real” snow day of the year. “The boys were out of school Wednesday and Thursday. They watched the skies all day Wednesday for the first snowflake,” said mom Beth Nelms. “When it finally started snowing here around 3 p.m., they were so excited.” Alcorn Central students Ethan Nelms, 9, and Christian Nelms, 8, built several snowmen in the front yard of the Farmington home and had a few snowball fights with their mom. “Ethan says I don’t make good snowballs,” added Beth. “In other words, I lost every snowball battle I had with my

Trey’s wife, Buffy Wayne. “We’re tubing, winter style,” said Trey Wayne, smiling. “Want to go for a ride?” Buffy Wayne pulled snow off her face during a short break. “It’s cold,” she said, her face covered in show. Most of the area’s snow melted on Thursday due to the warm, sunny skies. Roads and highways in the city and county were clear making travel much safer. “Fortunately we didn’t have a lot of ice in this storm. We had our crew out until just after midnight Thursday morning,” said District 1 Supervisor Lowell Hinton. “The slick places out in the county dried up pretty fast when the sun broke.” Hinton said he was ready for several days of warmer and clearer weather. “We need to finish up some patching work on the roads,” he added. “We’re hoping this snow and ice is done for a while.” Friday’s forecast includes Please see SNOW | 2A

More money is needed for Corinth’s downtown beautification. That’s the message Mona Lisa Grady delivered to members of the Corinth Area Convention & Visitors Bureau board this week. “We are requesting additional funding to help cover the costs of more landscape maintenance for the Corinth Beautification Program,” said Grady, the executive director of CREATE Foundation’s
CARE who oversees the program. “The additional funds will help us maintain the SoCo district’s new pocket park and bulb outs along Wick and Franklin Streets.” The program’s 2014 budget totaled $18,500 with CACVB, CARE and the City of Corinth contributing to the budget. Grady is seeking an increase of $5,000 for 2015, and requested a $3,000 increase from tourism. CARE will foot the other $1,500. Please see FUNDS | 2A
