Corinth Eye Clinic brings latest technology

Drs. Katie Richardson and Mike Weeden enjoy serving patients with the latest technology at Corinth Eye Clinic. The doctors at Corinth Eye Clinic insist on bringing the latest technology to eye care for their patients. “It’s an exciting time to be taking care of people with technology, allowing us to detect things a lot earlier,” said Dr. Mike Weeden. “We are able to pick up diseases of the eye and the body way before symptoms even present themselves in patients.” The modern equipment helps the team provide advanced eye care for common eye issues such as dry eye disease, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and cataracts while also helping to detect other health problems such as cardiovascular issues and brain tumors. When it comes to the eyes, he said people need to think about more than updating their eyeglasses and contact lenses. “Everybody should be doing, as we call it, ‘looking under the hood,’ said Weeden. “We want to see the back of the eye, the retina. It’s so important because it is the engine of the eye.” A native of New Albany, the optometrist has been in practice in Corinth for 25 years. The practice added 2,500 square feet to the office at 3201 Gaines Road and recently added an associate doctor, Katie Richardson, who is from Ripley. “We see a ton of diabetic patients,” she said. “It’s very important for them to get their eyes checked every year, just to be on the

safe side and make sure that everything looks good. We see lots of glaucoma here. We also see a lot of dryness, just being in the area that we are in.” The leading cause of blindness currently is diabetic retinopathy, said Weeden, while glaucoma, the “silent blinder,” is also a leading cause. Technology allows the office to more easily examine the eyes and find problems that may not have exhibited symptoms. “We have instruments now that we can sample a tear,” said Weeden. “One tear is extracted from the lower lid, and we are able to take measurements of how well your tears are producing. One of our newest additions is electrophysiology testing, where we can actually put sensors to the forehead and the back of the head and under the lid, and we are able to see how fast we are able to communicate between the eye receiving the information and the brain processing it. That’s very important in the early detection of optic nerve disease.” It’s hard to fix problems such as macular degeneration “once they really set up housekeeping,” he said. A specialty of Dr. Richardson is scleral lenses for irregular eye surfaces, and the office carries about 800 different types of frames. The practice employs 11 and sees about 40 patients per day.
