Main Street searching for director BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Main Street Corinth is searching for a new director. Board President Sara Beth Green said the process is off to a good start. “We have already received
six resumes for the position, all from very impressive candidates,” said Green. “I’ve also heard from several people who are getting resumes ready.” Green said the board is looking for someone who is detail originated, very organized and
has experience with planning, promoting and managing events. “A lot of people don’t realize that Main Street has a working board -- all board members are required to volunteer at events throughout the year, so the new
director won’t be doing anything alone,” she said. “They will have the full support from the board.” Main Street events include Films on Fillmore, Slugburger Festival, Hog Wild Championship BBQ Festival, Celebrate
Corinth and the Corinth-Alcorn County Christmas Parade. “Another requirement for the new director is to be as passionate about promoting Corinth as we are,” said Green. “We are Please see DIRECTOR | 2A
11,000 boxes of cookies Weather forecast calling for snow BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
A major weather event is expected to hit the Crossroads area today bringing heavy amounts of snow and sleet to the area. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect through midnight with extra attention focused on the extreme northern portion of Mississippi. “For Alcorn County, we think the area should receive three inches of mostly snow,
mixed with some sleet early,” said Memphis based Meteorologist Marlene Mickelson. “A surface low pressure system will help pump a lot of moisture into the area. Temps will hover in the lower 30s and high 20s throughout the day.” Mickelson said a Winter Storm Warning is much more serious and conditions will be favorable for a significant snow accumulation. A portion of the Crossroads Arena was turned into cookie heaven on Tuesday. Around 916 cases or almost 11,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies were delivered to the facility for pick-up by area troop leaders. Troops will be conducting booth sales starting Friday and continuing through Sunday.
Booths will be set up at area businesses such as Walmart, Gardner’s, Roger’s, Lowe’s, Kroger and Lil’s Chicago Italian Beef. “The sorting started early with all the troop leaders picking up their cookies throughout the day,” said Ginger Radtke, Brownie Troop 23806 Leader. “The girls are ecstatic about selling the cookies,” added Kristie Kyle with Brownie Troop 23083. “My daughter (Chloe
Buchanan) wanted me to check her out from school when I came to pick the cookies up.” Buchanan has already set a lofty goal when it comes to cookie sales. “She wants to sell 800 boxes,” said her mother. TISHOMINGO COUNTY — A wreck claimed the life of a 44-year-old Iuka man late Monday night. Paul “Pee Wee” Enlow Jr., sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall said the wreck happened around 9:15 p.m. on U.S. Highway 72 near Tishomingo County High School. “Upon arriving at the scene, officers said it appeared a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder was
traveling west bound when the vehicle lost control and overturned,” said Hall. Another occupant, Miles C. Williams, 33, of Corinth, was transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. He was later transferred to Regional One Health in Memphis where he remains in critical condition. According to Hall, both occupants were ejected from the vehicle during the crash. MHP is investigating the wreck. Funeral services for Williams is set for 11 a.m. today at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka.
Arena prepares for motorcycle racing event BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
It’s about to get dirty in the round. In preparation of several dirt related events during the first few weeks of March, the dirt floor installation will be completed this week at the Crossroads Arena. General Manager Tammy Genovese meet with the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau board Tuesday morning to make a formal request for funding for the upcoming MotoCross event on March 7. “This is always a good show, well attended and community originated,” said Genovese. “It’s a very affordable show for families
and kids really seem to love it.” The MotoCross event will be back in Corinth next month for their fifth year in a row when more than 250 professional motorcycle racers of all ages will attempt to qualify for the race. “The last two years, the event has averaged between 1,400 and 1,500 in attendance,” Genovese added. “Which is very good. We have seen a good bit of growth out of this event. It is one I hope to see come back every year.” Genovese asked the tourism board for $3,000 for event advertising. “This is not an arena produced event, but we always try to help the promoter with securing local
advertising,” she said. The one-day event will include practice, qualifying and the race. Board members approved Genovese’s funding request at $2,500 — to match what they had given the arena for the event the past two years. The arena manager also updated the board on the MSUSAG State Championship Gymnastics Competition set for March 20-22. “Everything is on schedule. I think they are really happy to be coming to Corinth. They love the arena and the layout,” said GenoStaff photo by Zack Steen vese. “It will be a good weekend Crossroads Arena General Manager Tammy Geno for Corinth.” vese meet with the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau board Tuesday morning to make a formal request Please see TOURISM | 6A for funding for the upcoming MotoCross event on March 7.

On this day in history 150 years ago Gen. Joseph E. Johnston resumes command of the Army of Tennessee after seven months. The army is reduced to 25,000 hungry and ragged men. “In my opinion, these troops form an army far too weak to cope with Sherman,” he said.
