Praised for his academic performance and dedication to excellence, Daniel G. Villaflor, 18, of Corinth has been named as a Finalist for the 2017 National Merit Scholarship. The designation means that the Corinth High School student (out of the 16,000 Semifinalists) has met all requirements of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in order to advance to Finalist standing. The art gallery is giving local high school students an opportunity to shine by using their designs on promotional materials. As part of the gallery’s “A Walk in History” project, students from each of the local high schools created images of landmarks such as the Jacinto Courthouse, Fillmore Street Chapel and B.F. Liddon home. Merry Overholt of the Corinth Artist Guild came up with the idea. “We want to promote our high school students and their artwork,” she said. “We will make cards of each one of these and use those

People of the Crossroads Jennifer Lancaster, Farmington Even though she is a sports enthusiast, Jennifer Lancaster said that is not the reason her favorite pastime is going to her children’s ballgames. She said she played softball and basketball when she was younger, and has always enjoyed sports, but she has other reasons for attending her children’s games. “I like the games, but I’m mostly there to witness their accomplishments and stand beside them in everything they do,” she said. Her other favorite thing to do is go to the ocean on family vacations. Lancaster has been employed at Money Now in Corinth for four years. She and her husband, Michael Lancaster, have been married almost 19 years. They have two children, Hunter, 18, and Michayla, 14.

Community Choir, according to Emmons. The choir – directed by McNairy Central Choral Director Sarah Lemons – features adult and high school singers. Percussionists from the McNairy Central band will also be performing. “The percussionists will teach African rhythm and drum methods which can be found in modern culture music,” said Emmons. Crossroads’ Davis headlines program (EDITOR’S NOTE: The following story by Assistant Editor Steve Beavers first appeared in the Independent Appeal. It is being reprinted with permission.) SELMER, Tenn. — Arts in McNairy is reaching out to all cultures during its first Black History celebration. “Why We Remember” will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Latta. Autry Davis – president of the Crossroads Poetry Project in Corinth – will be the keynote speaker. “He will do a 15-minute presentation on Black History,” said AiM Board Member Leanne Emmons. AiM is also bringing back its

The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate a weekend shooting. Sheriff Ben Caldwell told the Daily Corinthian the victim was 22-year-old Rick Dakota Holt of County Road 761, Corinth. He was shot once in the arm. A shooting suspect remains in custody. The sheriff identified the suspect as 22-year-old Christopher Clance of Tishomingo County. Aggravated assault charges are pending and the investigation continues, said Caldwell. “We are still sorting out the details,” he said. The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Friday in Baxter’s Trailer Park at County Road 520. Clance showed up at the residence and a physical altercation developed. Several shots were fired and one shot hit Holt, he said. It wasn’t clear if Holt was
