Icy highways kill two people BY MARK BOEHLER editor@dailycorinthian.com

GLEN — Icy highway conditions are being blamed for a Friday afternoon accident on U.S. Highway 72 just west of Glen which killed two people and sent two others to the hospital. It was the worst of many accidents on area highways when a slight snowfall turned into deadly freezing rain about noon. Officials at the fatal scene about six miles west of Corinth said two vehicles were involved in a collision in the westbound lane and at least two people exited other vehicles to offer assistance. An 18-wheeler topped the icy hill, tried to avoid the collision but jackknifed. The accident happened about 1:30 p.m. Officials at the scene said the truck hit three of the pedestrians and a vehicle. The victim trying to offer assistance was identified as 47-year-old Anna Davis Hill of 193 Highway 365, Burnsville. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was identified as 25-year-old Anahi Ramirez of 156 Montgomery Lane, Belmont. She died later at Magnolia Regional Health Center.

Two heavy duty wreckers had to be used to clear the deep ditch of an 18-wheeler on U.S. Highway 72 just east of Glen. See related photo on Page 2. Two others were transported by ambulance to MRHC. One

injured pedestrian was a young boy, who remains in stable con-

dition at MRHC. He is the son of Ramirez. A third victim was

in a vehicle involved in the first wreck. One of the vehicles could be seen upside down about 50 feet off the highway. The driver of the truck was not hurt and the 18-wheeler had heavy damage when it left the roadway and went into a deep ditch. Scores of law enforcement officials and volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene to help direct traffic and clean up. Officers with the Corinth Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol and Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department assisted and the Mississippi Department of Transportation arrived to place salt on the icy hill. MHP Public Information Officer Ray Hall said about 5 p.m. an official full report would be released on Saturday. Firefighters from many departments also assisted, including Farmington and Glen. U.S. Highway 72 westbound traffic came to a standstill for about an hour, then law enforcement provided two-way traffic on the eastbound side to keep traffic flowing. Officers assisted many trucks and vehicles in the westbound lane which were allowed to turn around and get to the eastbound side.
