City pulls signs from rights of way BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The City of Corinth pulled a number of political signs from rights of way on Wednesday as enforcement is stepped up. Numerous signs recently began to appear in the city. While
it is an “off” election year on the local level, supporters of presidential and congressional candidates will be looking to place signs within the public’s view. “What has triggered this is the amount of signage last year and people putting signs in
places that they shouldn’t,” said Code Enforcement Officer Kim Ratliff. “The way the current ordinance stands, you’re not supposed to put signage in any rights of way.” Most of the signs collected Wednesday were along South
Harper and Highway 72. They will be held for 14 days at City Hall and can be retrieved by the person who placed them. “Generally, you can put them on private property in neighborhoods, but, even then, they don’t need to be right next to
the curb,” said Ratliff. The timing of sign placement is regulated by the city code, which specifies that signs may be placed not sooner than 60 days before an election and Please see SIGNS | 5A
Sheriff purchases two new trucks
Perfection
BY ZACK STEEN
“We are in desperate need of new patrol vehicles.”

Sheriff Ben Caldwell received good news this week. The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors gave their OK for Caldwell to purchase two new Dodge Ram police package pickup trucks. The trucks will be the first new vehicles purchased by the sheriff’s department in more than eight years. “We are in desperate need of new patrol vehicles,” said Caldwell. The board approved the purchase of two pickup trucks at the state contract price of $26,500 per vehicle. Trustmark Bank will finance the purchase on a 36-month lease at 1.68 percent. Caldwell said once the trucks patrol purposes expire, the vehicles will be passed
Ben Caldwell Alcorn County sheriff down to supervisor districts to be used as road crew vehicles. The sheriff originally considered the purchase of one Dodge truck and one Ford Explorer, but after contracting other sheriff departments who utilize both vehicles, he decided the Dodge truck would perform better. Caldwell also reminded the board the new vehicle purPlease see SHERIFF | 5A

Tony Harris added his name to the list of bowling perfection with a 300 game at Plaza Lanes.
Tony Harris bowls a 300 game BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Lanes one and two have been kind to bowler Tony Harris. He has reached perfection when it comes to bowling and finding a wife at Plaza Lanes. Harris rolled his first 300 game on the two at Plaza Lanes some 16 years after meeting his wife, Lee Ann, at the bowling alley. “I guess you could say I have been lucky when it comes to lanes one and two,” said Harris with a smile. The 51-year-old bowler rolled his first sanctioned 300 game in his final game of the night in the Monday Night Major League
on Feb. 8. Harris, who took up bowling at the age of eight, had already rolled a 217 and 245 before finishing the night off in perfect fashion. “When I threw the ninth strike I started thinking about it a little bit,” he said. “I just stopped and took a couple of breaths.” He had come close to 300 in 2007. Harris finished with a 299 while bowling on lanes five and six. “I put more pressure on myself when I bowled the 299,” he said. “I was thinking I was going to do it the other night … it was pretty normal.” The 300 was still on his mind
a few hours later. “An hour and half later, I was sitting at the house and asked my wife ‘can you believe I did it?”’ said Harris. Harris bowls in two leagues at Plaza Lanes and 2-4 tournaments a month. “Bowling is something I have always loved,” he said. “I enjoy being around people and have met some really nice folks bowling.” Pure enjoyment is why the veteran bowler continues playing. “I do it for fun,” he said. “My main goal is to get my average Please see HARRIS | 5A
State OKs school district innovation BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
The Corinth School District is officially a District of Innovation. Corinth was one of three school districts awarded the designation by the Mississippi State Board of Education. School districts in Vicksburg and Gulfport were also awarded. Superintendent Lee Childress presented a proposal to the state board on Thursday before being approved. He
said the District of Innovation program encourages school districts to try new practices. The designation also allows the district to make several major changes to the district’s school calendar. School will now be in session from Aug. 1 to June 15 with an extended fall break from Oct. 3 to Oct. 21 and a spring break from March 13 through March 31. Christmas break would be the usual Please see DISTRICT | 5A
