Cleanup is expected to go on for days in the wake of a storm that conjured unpleasant memories of Ice Storm ’94. After a long day and night of cleaning up snapped limbs and trees resulting from Monday’s freezing rain, county supervisors’ crews continued the job on Tuesday. The west side of the county appeared to be hardest hit. Fifth District Supervisor Jimmy Tate Waldon said his crew was out until 10 p.m. Monday, and he was concerned about lingering patches of ice on the

Winter weather will continue to plague the Crossroads area this week. Subzero temperatures are expected tonight as the National Weather Service forecasts a low of 1 degree for Corinth. “Bitterly cold subzero temperatures will occur over the Tennessee River Valley and North Mississippi Thursday morning with single digit temperatures expected,” said NWS. Some news outlets predict tonight’s low will drop below 0 degrees, which has prompted pipe freezing reminders.

“Leaving cabinet doors open under sinks is important,” according to the NWS. “Homeowners should also ensure both the hot and cold water remains dripping over night to help prevent pipes from freezing.” The NWS also suggests any animals or livestock normally left outside be provided shelter during below freezing nights. The extreme cold will continue to damper the icy conditions in the area. “Some roads will become a solid sheet of ice due to temperatures dropping,” added NWS. “Some melting could occur due to sunshine, however cau-

tion should still be taken as any standing water on pavement will refreeze each night.” NWS said black ice will be a serious problem in some locations. Some clouds will hang around today, but a chance of a snow flurry will continue. Today’s low is expected to climb to 25 degrees with an overnight wind chill values expected as low as -7 degrees. Thursday’s forecast includes mostly sunny skies and a high near 22. Overnight lows in the mid teens are forecasted for Please see COLD | 2A

But what you run into is everything is clear except the shaded area that the sun hasn’t got to, and it’s frozen solid.” He said it was a huge challenge to keep the roads clear Monday, particularly with a large population of pine trees.
