Chiropractor pleads guilty, avoids jail BY JEFF YORK For the Daily Corinthian

An Adamsville, Tennessee chiropractor avoided a jail sentence and managed to retain his medical license after pleading guilty to statutory rape this week in McNairy County Circuit Court. Matthew Barnes had been facing a charge of a statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl, who was a student

in one of his self-defense classes. He pleaded guilty to one county of aggravated statutory rape, a Class D felony, and will be on probation for four years. Circuit Court Judge J. Weber McCraw placed Barnes on supervised probation for the maximum period of 4 years, during which he will be required to register and report as a sex offender pursuant to applicable

state law, and have no further contact with the minor victim in the case. The victim’s family did agree with the judge’s ruling of judicial diversion. Barnes also petitioned the court for the extraordinary relief of judicial diversion, by which the finding of guilt is withheld, and upon successful completion of the diversion

supervised probationary period, the charges can be dismissed and expunged from the defendant’s criminal record. There are several statutory factors that the court must consider in making a determination of judicial diversion relief, including the fact that the defendant has no prior criminal history. Snow accumulation in Monday forecast BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Anyone not on holiday for President’s Day may face a slippery work commute as a developing storm appears likely to bring an accumulating snowfall. Meteorologist Jim Branda of the National Weather Service Memphis Forecast Office said at least an inch of snow looks likely for Corinth, but the forecast computer models still have a great deal of uncertainty.

“I think the best chance for Corinth to see some accumulations will probably be in the 6 in the morning to noon timeframe on Monday,” he said. Accumulations could be rather light or enough to prompt a winter storm warning — it was too soon to tell Friday afternoon. “Some of the model data shows the I-40 corridor and north Mississippi actually get-

This is the final story in a four-part series profiling programs at the Alcorn Career and Technology Center. Wrapping up the CTE (Career and Technical Education) showcase series, these last three featured courses allow students to dive in and get their hands dirty as they experience things for themselves.
