Board OKs hiring of some principals BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
A group of administrative rehires brought a new question to light at the recent meeting of the Alcorn County school board. When board of education members were asked to approve the 2016-17 rehire of principals at Alcorn Central and Kossuth only, an audience member asked Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell why principals from Glendale, Rienzi and Biggersville schools were not included. “Are they not being rehired
because y’all plan on closing them down?” asked the woman. Mitchell responded, “Administrators are rehired at different times or when board members are ready to bring them up for rehire.” Glendale and Rienzi elementary schools are currently in the middle of a battle between the superintendent and school supporters wanting the K-6th grade schools to remain open. The board gave Mitchell approval earlier this month to investigate the savings associated with the shut down of the two
smallest schools in the county. The district is $5 million in debt and Mitchell said the closure of Glen and Rienzi schools would save more than $700,000 per year. The recent staff approvals included 240-day contract rehires for Alcorn Central principals John Anderson, Brian Phelps, Brandon Quinn and Brian Johnson and Kossuth principals Joe Horton, Charla Essary, Sam Roberts and Travis Smith. Missing from the list were Rienzi Principal Stan Platt,
Glendale Principal Elisabeth Wamsley and Biggersville principals Brian Johnson and Chad Lindamood. All principals and administrators were normally rehired for the upcoming school year between February and April in previous years. Other rehires included district office staffers Ritchie Williams, Peggie Bundy, Randy Holt, Stephanie Clausel, Rose Seaborn, Kimberly Woodard and Tammy Johnson, and Alcorn Career and Technology Center Director Rodney Hopper.
In other school district employment news, the board approved the hiring of Tracey Monroe for Kossuth Elementary School as a special education teacher. Monroe will replace Ben Holley, who moves to day treatment. Brandon Cherry was approved as volunteer football coach at Alcorn Central High School. The board approved Beverly Mercer as a floating cafeteria substitute for all district schools after Emma Roach’s resignation for the same position was accepted.
Congressman opens local office

FARMINGTON — U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly of Saltillo has opened a district office at Farmington City Hall. “We’re glad to have them,” said Farmington Mayor Dale Fortenberry, who relocated his own office within City Hall to help accommodate the district office. An open house for the office is set for 10 a.m. Monday. Melinda Whited of Iuka will
staff the office. Fortenberry said conversations with Kelly began last fall about having a district office in Farmington. It is a rare instance — if not the first time — that a sitting congressman has had a district office in Alcorn County, he said. The former district attorney took office in June after winning the First Congressional District special election to replace the late Alan Nunnelee.
