Shelter cover pet Officials give up

school ownership BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors agreed to give up the county’s ownership stake in the closed Glendale Elementary School property, allowing the community to move forward with its plans for the building. When the school closed, a portion of the property stayed under Alcorn School District ownership, and part of it reverted to the county government. “The town voted to approve at its last board meeting taking that property from the county and from the school system in order to combine ownership under one entity that could spearhead whatever efforts

Fundraiser calendars arrive BY ZACK STEEN

“We were simply overwhelmed. The turnout was amazing – our biggest year yet ... and the cover pet, Rupert, adds a nice classy touch to the calendar this year.”

The calendars have finally arrived and a former rescue is on the cover. The second leg of CorinthAlcorn Animal Shelter’s biggest annual fundraiser kicked off this week with the late arrival of their 2017 calendar. Gracing the cover is Rupert Sayre, thanks in part to his fur-ever home parents Cotter and Linda Sayre who rallied around the little pup as he barked his way to the cover pet victory late last summer. Rupert, a small fawn-colored “Heinz 57” terrier mix, received more than 770 votes in the calendar submission and voting contest which raised

Charlotte Doehner Volunteer director $6,492 for the no-kill shelter. Another $1,775 was also received from advertisers to help cover the cost of printing. “We were simply overwhelmed,” said Volunteer Director Charlotte Doehner. “The turnout was amazing – our biggest year yet ... and the

In other business: • The county’s restructuring of bonds associated with the regional correctional facility and justice center offices continues to move forward. The bonds for the second phase have been sold and are set to close on Feb. 16. The bonds were split into two parts — one for the prison and one for the associated offices — with the goal of reducing the county’s payments. Please see SCHOOL | 2A

Board puts brakes on drive-through BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The possibility of a second location for the tax collector’s office with a drive-through window for tax payments and car tag renewals is off the table for the current fiscal year. The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors on Monday voted not to proceed with possible plans to establish a location with a drive-through because of concerns about the proposed site and because it was not budgeted for this fiscal year. Tax Collector Larry Ross was interested in leasing space at the former Trustmark Bank branch location at the corner of East Shiloh Road and North
