KOSSUTH — The old auditorium on the Kossuth Elementary School campus was the showcase of hundreds of graduations, performances, award presentations and Christmas plays for more than 70 years. In 2010, the curtain was drawn on the final show inside the historic venue. Engineers said the building was unsafe, and school officials reacted by chaining the doors. Now Alcorn School District Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell wants to repair and reopen the auditorium for current and future Aggies to enjoy. Previously identified incorrectly as a gym, the audito-

rium was built in 1936 and includes a stage with around 650 seats. The building also includes several currently unused class rooms. Since 2010, KES has used a much smaller multipurpose building on campus for their auditorium needs. “It is extremely small — and, to be honest, there has never been enough room to hold all students, staff and parents at the same time,” said Mitchell. “It’s really ridiculous that the auditorium was shut down, because the trouble is more visual than structural.” Mitchell said the 2010 engineer’s report never said the building should be conPlease see AUDITORIUM | 6A

Non-stop laughter is coming to the Crossroads Arena. The North Mississippi All Star Comedy Show will be responsible for the busting out cackling when it debuts Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. Funnyman Rodney Perry is slated to headline the event which consists of celebrity comedians from the Shaquille O’Neal All Star Comedy Jam, the Monique Show, Def Comedy Jam and BET’s Comic-View. “People should expect to hear a great lineup along with

a couple of two new comedians,” said promoter Dewayne Sorrell. Perry is known for his starring role as “Harold” in Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family. Perry has also served as the co-host of The Mo’Nique Show. “He is a funny guy and I wanted him to come to my hometown to perform,” said Sorrell, a 1994 Corinth High School graduate.
