Puppy mill owners enter guilty pleas BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

The owners of the two puppy mills raided last year pleaded guilty to misdemeanor animal abuse charges in Alcorn County Justice Court Thursday. Larry and Juanita Meeks and Orville and Gloria Greenhaw each received a 90-day jail sentence, a $500 fine and a lifetime ownership ban on animals. “I am extremely pleased with the outcome of this case,” said Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter volunteer director Charlotte

about one mile from the Tennessee line and Meeks’ property on Kendrick Road adjacent to Kimberly Clark. The October raids cost the Humane Society more than $200,000. The animals, mostly expensive breed dogs and cats often sold at flea markets, were living in intolerable conditions with no access to clean water or food. Many of the animals were underweight and were suffering from a multitude of untreated medical conditions.

Doehner. “I hope the people throughout Alcorn County who are currently involved with any type of animal abuse see that we mean business.” The jail sentence was suspended for all four individuals due to their age. The ownership ban will allow one family pet per household. Officials with the Humane Society of the United States assisted Doehner and her staff in the removal and onsite treatment of 171 abused animals from Greenhaw’s property in northeastern Alcorn County

City adopts truck rules

BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen adopted an ordinance designed to keep big trucks off residential streets and away from low clearances as they come into the city. The ordinance establishing truck routes and travel restrictions applies to vehicles with a weight in excess of 25,000 pounds. “This is geared toward guiding the trucks that are from out of town and are trying to get where they need to go,” said Street Commissioner Philip Verdung. “It’s also about trying to disperse truck traffic evenly and on the proper roads in Corinth. It’s not intended to restrict any delivery to any business.” Trucks that will be exempt from the ordinance are vehicles associated with government service, utilities, emergency response, garbage collection, residential package delivery, residential moving and agricultural implements. The ordinance will help facilitate the placement of signage on the highway right of ways. “We have several significant problems around town with the trucks getting where they want to go, and these truck drivers
