City eyes grant for sidewalks, lights BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The city of Corinth will apply for grant funding for two separate sidewalk projects, one including lighting. The Board of Aldermen on Tuesday approved submitting the applications through the Transportation Alternatives Program. One project focuses on Meigg

Street between South Parkway and Cass Street with sidewalks and what is described as upscale street lighting. The total cost is $800,920, with the city contributing a match of $246,712. The other would essentially extend the hiking and biking route from South Harper by providing sidewalks on Droke Road and Clark Street and

through the park. The cost is $389,305 with the city contributing a match of $129,336. The grant program targets alternatives such as on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, recreational trails and safe-routes-to-school projects. In other business: • The board approved the police department’s purchase of three radios — two for new

patrol vehicles and one for the 911 office. The radio for 911 will enable the recording of the department’s radio traffic. The radios are the newer type that operate on the Mississippi Wireless Integrated Network. The cost of the radios purchase is $6,417. • Street Commissioner Philip Verdung reported that the needed part to get the leaf vac-

uum back in operation has arrived. In the board’s agenda workshop, he also reported that he is looking into electronics recycling options for the city. The provider of the service would possibly place a receptacle with the recycling bins on Fulton Drive where residents could Please see GRANT | 3A

Character Breakfast to raise ‘cheese’ for trip to Disney BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Mickey and Minnie Mouse are coming to breakfast. The two lovable mice are just a pair of Disney personalities who will be on hand during the “Breakfast with Characters” event to raise money for “Havis’ Kids” on Feb. 22. Havis Hurley is the organizer of a trip to carry a special needs group to Disney World. Members of the Corinth-Alcorn County Special Needs Group are scheduled to leave for the magical place in May. “This is one of the ideas we came up with while brainstorming,” said Jennifer Edwards. “Since the breakfast is something done at Disney World, we thought it would be a good idea to do it here.” There will be princesses and even

some pirates on hand during the 8 a.m. to noon event at First United Methodist Church. Tickets are $5 and parents will be allowed to take photos of their children with the characters at no charge. The breakfast – consisting of pancakes, sausage and juice – will be done in two sessions, according to Edwards. The first session is scheduled for 8-10 a.m. with the second happening from 10 a.m. to noon. Organizers are planning on having 300 tickets available for both sessions combined. “If someone is interested, we aren’t going to turn them away,” added Edwards. “I think this is going to be a fun event,” added Hurley. “After this fundraiser, we will have two more left and then we are Please see BREAKFAST | 6A

Cait-Lynn Chambers stepped up to the microphone, unleashing a strobe of flashes and thunderous applause as she uttered the correct spelling of the winning word. The smell of victory was mixed with

something else. Could it be?...Oh, yes...gardenia. Gardenia, that one little word changed everything. “It feels really great,” said Chambers as she answered questions and posed for more pictures. “This was my first spelling bee.” “I practiced for at least 15 minutes everyday. I did it at home, at school and even on the bus,” added contesPlease see SPELLING | 6A
