County will seek new alert system BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Alcorn County will opt out of the CodeRED notification system when its contract expires later this year. The Board of Supervisors on Monday approved its final payment of $16,542 on the alert system. The county was among several entities included in a contract brokered by the Northeast Mississippi Planning and Development District. The service will continue through September, and Emer-
gency Services Coordinator Ricky Gibens said it will be necessary to line up another service to send out alerts on situations such as tornado warnings and road closings. He said citizens have become accustomed to having the service, and it is also currently being used to dispatch some county firemen. Supervisors have been unhappy with being left with a greater than expected cost when some of the entities exPlease see ALERT | 2
Park Inn offering First litter cleanup in the bag wine tasting event Photo by Andrea Rose
Volunteers picked up 18 bags of trash on Harper Road during Friday’s first monthly cleanup event. See related photo on page 2.
A dozen community volunteers spent some time on Friday improving the look of Harper Road by picking up trash. The volunteers scoured the area from the Shiloh intersection to the railroad crossing south of Corinth High School as part of a new monthly effort. “The first community cleanup went awesome,” said Community Development Director Andrea Rose. “We collected roughly 18 bags of trash.” The second community
cleanup is set for Thursday, Feb. 12, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the three Corinth school campuses and at Kossuth School. The third event is set for March 20, noon to 2 p.m., at a location to be announced later. Among Friday’s participants were members of the Pack 27 Webelos, who also picked up seven bags of trash at the city park after school hours. Rose said Keep CorinthAlcorn Beautiful is organizing
the events to fight the problem of litter, which tends to multiply when other litter is present. KC-AB provides volunteers with the needed supplies including gloves, litter grabbers, safety vests and garbage bags. For the Feb. 12 cleanup, volunteers are asked to assemble at Warrior Circle at Corinth Middle School, across from Corinth Elementary School, in the Corinth High School front parking lot and next to the “blue building” at Kossuth.

Animal shelter plans gun raffle fundrasier BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Searching for new ways to raise the extra $100,000 needed to keep the doors open, the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is teaming with local Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell for their “30 Guns, 120 Minutes” fundraiser. The event, set for April 25 from noon to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Post 6 building on Tate Street, will offer a raffle of 30 guns and a fish fry. Caldwell and his wife, Amanda, successfully completed a similar fundraiser in 2012 to raise money for Kossuth High School band uniforms. More than $13,000 was raised on the guns alone, and Amanda hopes for even better re-
sults for the shelter. “Joe and I are both huge animal lovers, and we have a shelter baby we love to death,” said Amanda. “When we first read about the shelter’s lack of full funding, we knew we had to do something to help.” A full-time nurse at Magnolia Regional Health Center’s Surgery Center, Amanda said the gun raffle will feature a wide selection of different types of popular hand guns and hunting riffles. “Tickets should go on sale next week,” she said. “They will then be available for purchase up until the day before the event.” Tickets are $30 per gun raffle Please see RAFFLE | 2
