Removing Old Moses Jobless rate shows modest increase BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County unemployment hit 6.3 percent in December, showing an increase from the prior month and a year ago. The not seasonally adjusted rate generally rose across the state, with Mississippi unemployment at 7.2 percent, rising from 5.8 percent in November. Alcorn County’s rate compares to 5.2 percent in November and 6 percent a year ago. The county retained a spot in the state’s top 10, ranking ninth. Labor market data released

Wednesday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security showed the county with 1,010 unemployed, compared to 910 a year earlier, and 15,020 employed, compared to 14,190 in December 2014. The county had 87 initial claims for unemployment insurance during the month, compared to 109 a year ago, and 414 continued claims, compared to 509 in December 2014. A trio of American Legion Post 6 members couldn’t ask for a better crowd as it shared a portion of its Americanism program with the youngsters Wednesday morning. “I look at this as being our primary community program,” said Post 6 Commander Tommy Watson. “Teachers now expect us to be here and

All first graders are presented a miniature American Flag while second graders receive a ruler with the Golden Rule listed on the front.
