Area jobless rate continues to fall BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County unemployment registered at 6.2 percent in December, continuing a downward trend from year-ago figures. The county posted 6.6 percent in December 2013. The not seasonally adjusted rate for the latest month, however, is up from 5.7 percent in November. Mississippi’s not season-

ally adjusted rate also increased from 6.4 percent in November to 7.1 percent in December, going against the usual trend in a month that often sees retail trade adding workers for the holiday shopping period. Alcorn County had 930 unemployed for the month, compared to 1,010 a year earlier. The number employed Please see JOBLESS | 2

A night of laughter Series focuses on solving murder for MRA banquet BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

A simple burglary arrest turned into something more in 2008. Two investigators with the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department put the wheels in motion of solving a 23-yearold murder in March of that year. The details of the local arrest and shocking discovery of murder will be told by the Investigation Discovery (ID) network. The ID series, Murder Book, will be telecast on Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. and contains interviews from sheriff’s department investigator Reggie

Anderson and Corinth Police Department detective Jerry Rogers. The episode – Marvin the Mummy – is the last of 10 being done this season by ID. Anderson and Rogers played a vital part in solving the cold case murder of Thomas William Brannon. The arrest of Wallace Daniel Spence by the two investigators at that time was the beginning of finding out who killed Brannon in 1985. “We worked on it for a good four months … trying to find anything to back up what Spence was telling us when he was arrested,” said Rogers.

What Spence had told them was he had committed several murders across the United States. Spence was taken in custody for stealing a woman’s purse and forging her name to a check. “It was a slam dunk case because we had a witness and video evidence were he had cashed the check,” said Anderson. The two investigators wanted more. Another burglary had happened in the area and they thought Spence could be tied to it. “A week or so went by and Please see SERIES | 2

SELMER, Tenn. — A “Night of Excellence and Laughter” will be the theme of this year’s McNairy Regional Alliance Banquet. The annual banquet will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 beginning at 6 p.m. at Pickwick Landing State Park. MRA leaders are happy to announce they will have another capacity crowd for their annual banquet. They have sold out of the 480 tickets prior to the event. The banquet will feature local comedians Nicholas Inman,

Bernard Strayhorn and Sam Vise. These comedians will be competing to win the title of “King of Comedy.” Russell Ingle, director of chamber programs for MRA, said the local comedians were such a hit last year that there was no need in bringing back a professional comedian this year. “We had such a great audience response last year that we had to do it again this year,” said Ingle. “They help us raise money and help everyone have a good time at the banquet.” Please see BANQUET | 2

Scholarships pay tribute to four Real Grandsons BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Four new scholarships are now available to high school seniors. The Colonel William P. Rogers Sons of Confederate Veterans are paying tribute to four Real Grandsons by awarding scholarships in their names. “Any senior who will graduate this spring from a high school in Alcorn County is eligible to apply for the scholarships,” said Larry Mangus with the Colonel Rogers Camp. Over the last four years, the camp has awarded two Real Sons scholarships in honor of Willie J. Cartwright and James J. Nelms, who both passed away in 2010. Cartwright’s father, Pvt. John Henry Cartwright, served with

the 1st Mississippi Infantry. Nelms’ father, Pvt. James J. Nelms Sr., was a member of Company B of the 8th Mississippi Cavalry. “The purpose of the two scholarships is to recognize them as the last two living Real Sons in the state,” said Mangus. The addition of the four new scholarships brings the camp’s total to six to be awarded this spring. “We are very proud of our Real Grandsons and are very pleased to honor them with the named scholarships,” said Mangus. The new scholarships are being named for Leroy Worsham, Christy Morgan, Arthur Dalton and Harvey Cartwright.
